Prem Krishna Sharma was born in 1937. His father worked as a station master in the Indian Railways and was posted in Chittorgarh. After the transfer of his father, they all moved to Mathura. Prem passed his matriculation from Mathura itself.
Then, he came to Kota for higher studies and did M.A. in Hindi Literature. At that time, the trend of double courses used to be there so Prem also took admission in Law along with his M.A. and completed that as well.
Prem says that he wanted to get into the field of literature but after doing Law, his father insisted on pursuing the same as a career and his passion for literature took a backseat.
Prem says that he came from a middle-class family and had seen the plight of the laborers and workers from the lower strata of society. He decided to help these people in understanding their rights and the laws that benefited them.
He initially worked for the laborers working at the Chambal Dam and J.K factory in Kota and made them aware of the concept of a ‘union’. He then came to Jaipur and started practicing labor laws. He has also worked in the High Court of Rajasthan and has also practiced at the Supreme Court of India.
In 1992, Prem came up with the idea of starting his own NGO to work for the downtrodden and, along with his friends, established the Academy for Socio-Legal Studies. Prem says that the reason for establishing this organization was to provide knowledge and education about laws and rights to laborers and workers and to impart free education to children residing in slums who do not have the means and resources to get a good education.
Talking about struggle, Prem says that convincing people that his organization was determined to work for their benefit and not to take advantage of them is always a tough task. People do not believe their intentions easily. Prem also mentions that initially they used to get funding from some foreign entities as well but that too has stopped due to government regulations through FCRA. They are managing with whatever resources they could get and are passionate about running their organization in the best possible way.
Talking about achievements, he feels that writing his first novel, ‘Purva Sandhya’ was one of his achievements. He has also received the ‘Vishista Upanyaskar Award’ from one organization.
Prem feels that one cannot be made a social worker or feelings for others cannot be taught. Such concerns can only come when one sees people in distress and feels their pain themselves.
Prem says that the Success Mantra for him is to face every difficulty in life with strength and never give up.
In his free time, he likes to devote his time to the literature world and to writing and reading novels.
