I have learned more from my failures than from my successes.
Prathima Manohar is the Founder of The Urban Vision - Think-Do Tank. She is a serial entrepreneur and is associated with ecotourism and the gig economy as well. Along with this, she also works at The Times of India as a Broadcast Journalist and a Print Columnist.
Prathima hails from Udupi, Karnataka. She comes from a family of entrepreneurs. Growing up, she was fascinated with architecture and the multifaceted nature of the field. So, she studied architecture. She has studied at Harvard Kennedy School and Stanford University. Recalling her childhood, Prathima says that it was amazing and very joyful, and that she relished visiting her grandparents on vacations and spending fun time with them.
Being a passionate architect and from a family of businessmen, Prathima started up an architecture venture which is a think-do tank primarily focused on urban architecture planning. While she was in the architecture school, she started writing for the Times of India as a journalist for urban affairs and is currently associated with it as well. She says that as her family has businesses in the hospitality industry, it drew her as well to initiate a venture in the field. Thus she became a tourism incubator promoting local tourism businesses. She shares that the best part about her work is that she is passionate about it and its sub-niches. Prathima’s plan for the future is to institute a system which is self-sufficient and self-driven so that it can continue even in her absence.
When asked about her leadership style, Prathima says that she is not exactly a born leader, but her father was one, and she has learned it partly from him through observation. She further vamped up her leadership skills by getting in touch with mentors and leadership coaches.
Talking about role models, Prathima says that she looks for inspiration in everyone she can. However, she says that she is particularly inspired by her father and mother who have been influential figures in her life. She also admires politicians like Mahatma Gandhi, Barack Obama, etc. who have influenced a large group of people.
Drawing comparisons between the value of education and experience in life, Prathima says that she is an avid learner and believes that education is very important. She further says that while experience helps one to do good in one's work, she would not mind not knowing some things. She summarises by saying that it is a mix of both education and experience that make you a better professional.
Speaking of her achievements, Prathima says that she is proud of building multiple public spaces in and around Mumbai and her experiments in the field of affordable housing. She deems graduating the first batch of tourism entrepreneurs as her another achievement.
Advising budding entrepreneurs, Prathima says that you should just go at it with determination if you are really passionate about it. She says that an undying passion is what will make you successful in whatever career path you may choose.
In her leisure time, Prathima likes to go kayaking, walking on the beaches, and travelling.
Given a chance to go back in time with a time machine and change something from her past, Prathima says that she would like to pass the opportunity as she is grateful for everything in her life and wouldn’t like to change anything.
Sharing her insights on the impact of the COVID pandemic, Prathima says that although it was a horrific experience for everyone, it gave us an opportunity to reflect upon our fractured social and economic structure and make it better. On a personal level, she says that she learned to cherish the little moments and value of her life.
