Piyush Pushalal Pawar is a Santoor Player. He hails from Jodhpur. He has been offering his services in the music field for the past sixty-two years. He plays the Santoor- a Kashmiri musical instrument.
Piyush claims that when he started playing the santoor, he was among the only three santoor players in the country.
Describing his journey, Piyush says he was destined to get into the field of music, as his father was the court musician of the Jodhpur dynasty. His father used to teach them music with a harmonium. He started learning music when he was only three years old.
His family moved to Ajmer after a few years. He completed his school education up to the tenth grade in Ajmer. He impressed and surprised his teachers with his musical talent. He won many of the singing and music competitions for his school. His family used to force him to stick to music only and not distract himself with other sports activities.
Piyush has played with many prominent singers from India and Pakistan, like Mehandi Hasan, Ghulam Ali, and many more. He used to learn to play santoor by watching the TV shows of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma. He met his guru, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, for the first time on the sets of Delhi Doordarshan. He then told his guru that he had learned to play the santoor only by watching his TV shows. Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma was very much impressed with his dedication and passion. Piyush says he feels very happy whenever he thinks back to the time when his guru used to give him love like a father.
Speaking about his struggles, Piyush says he remembers the time when he bought a santoor for the first time to learn how to play it. As he was an expert in playing the Sitar, he decided to try playing the santoor on his own, but when he started playing the santoor, he took a week to just tune the instrument. Then he realized that he had underestimated the instrument.
When asked about his accomplishments, Piyush responds that he is pleased to have elevated his father's reputation in the domestic and international music community. He is particularly pleased with himself for having mastered the santoor, a stringed instrument.
Piyush advises the musicians that a person with an interest in music should never give it up in life and should keep doing their practice.
