Pia Kapoor Bhatia is a social worker who is currently pursuing her PhD at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Her specialization is Climate Change and the ecosystems of India. She was born and brought up in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and belongs to a democratic and modern family.
Influenced by her mother, who is a social worker herself, Pia decided to take up this field. She also traveled with her mother to UN conferences. Following in her mother's footsteps, Pia did her thesis on HIV. While pursuing her MPhil, Pia’s interest got tweaked towards climate change and environmental issues. She feels each one of us can make changes in our patterns of consumption to live our lives in a sustainable manner.
Talking about her struggles, Pia shares that it was challenging for her to pick the right job for herself. She adds that it took a year for her to find the right mentor to guide her in her PhD journey. Pia says that the journey of becoming a doctorate is quite lonely and can get daunting. To overcome her loneliness and to achieve peace of mind, Pia joined yoga classes, and inspired by them, she also did a training course in yoga.
Pia considers the Indian social activist, Bunker Roy, as her role model. She admires him for his means and contributions to giving back to society.
Pia defines her Success Mantra as finding one’s passion and putting their heart and soul into making it a reality. She adds that when things don’t work your way, then one should find alternative ways to reach your destination. Pia asserts that being financially self-sufficient while giving back to society also accounts for success.
The quote that inspires her the most is by Maya Angelou, which says, "You will face many defeats in life, but never let yourself be defeated."
Pia feels that these days the younger generation lose sight of the bigger picture and get negative when things don’t turn out as per their expectations. She urges the young to never let failures decide who they are, but learn from them. Pia thinks that they should also consider their nature, interests, and priorities while choosing a career or the right job for themselves. She adds that the real world is completely different from what we learn in classrooms.
Pia feels accomplished for being financially independent and being able to utilize her skills to create a positive impact in society. She enjoys researching and giving her suggestions on policy formulations that take place at the top level.
Pia says that social work will never cease to exist as long as we humans are on this Earth. She feels that there is no end to human problems and there are always going to be some who will be left behind in the process of development. Pia goes on to say that all schools and colleges should raise awareness of these pressing issues and introduce students to social concepts.
Pia suggests aspiring social workers to work in CSR, NGOs, or start their own enterprise.
Besides, Pia is a voracious reader who also likes to watch Netflix in her free time. She also enjoys singing and urges everyone to take some time out from their busy schedules and follow their hobbies.
