A Bharatanatyam dancer and teacher, Parshwanath Upadhye believes that dance is not just an extracurricular activity but it is an art that needs a lot of training as well as deep interest.

Parshwanath Upadhye is a Bharatanatyam artist and teacher who has been doing Bharatanatyam  for the last three decades.

Parshwanath started learning Bharatanatyam at the age of six. He belongs to Belgaum in Karnataka. For the last 10 years he has been running  a dance school.

His mother was a singer and she encouraged him to dance. She also kept him always busy with various things. He also learnt Karate and  got a black belt in it and participated in different district-level tournaments. He is currently staying in Bangalore where he runs his dance academy.

Remembering his childhood, Parshwanth says that he took dance and music very seriously as he considered it an art and not only an extracurricular activity. He completed his education from Belgaum and did his Masters in Kannada Literature from Karnataka University. After completing his education, Parshwanath moved to Bangalore for the Vidwath and Alankar exams in Bharatanatyam under his gurus Kiran Subramanyam and Sandhya Kiran. Currently, he is learning under guru Sudharani Raghupathy.

Talking about his journey as an artist, Parshwanath says it has always been very enjoyable and happiness has always been his priority. Throughout his life, the support pillar was his mother who pushed him at every step. Parshwanth’s mother always motivated him to attend various competitions to achieve growth and success in life.

In the course of his journey, Parshwanath has received many awards and recognitions. He was recognised as a Graded Artist by Bangalore Doordarshan, as an empanelled Artist by the ICCR, got the Bismillah Khan Award (Yuva Puraskar) by Sangeet Natak Academy and the Best Male Dancer Award by Music Academy in Chennai. However, Parshwnath believes that his students are the real achievements for him.

Recalling his dreams, Parshwnath says that he always wanted to become a dancer and decided to choose dance as a profession. In his opinion, riyaz (practising) is the most important thing in the life of every artist.

Talking about his mistakes, Parshwanath says that to gain knowledge and to go through the learning process it is necessary to make mistakes. He believes that as a human being we make a lot of mistakes that teach us to rectify it. Parshwanath says that an artist  should have no fear of making mistakes.

Parshwanath believes that the biggest accomplishment for him is that he is still enjoying dance and is able to create something new. The principle followed by him is to be humble and bow-down towards the Art.

Parshwanath’s role model was his grandmother as she handled the difficult situations very calmly and effectively. In terms of Art he admires all his gurus and currently his biggest source of inspiration are his students.

Parshwanath’s life mantra is to be humble and grounded. He says don’t judge people and enjoy what you are doing. Interest and training both are important to achieve the desired goals and objectives in life, says Parshwanath.

When free, Parshwanath loves to do photography, videography and making short films, and also likes swimming and cricket.
