Everyone should learn some kind of art.
Om Prakash Soni is the owner of a jewellery shop named Om Jewellers in Udaipur.
An Udaipur native, Om Prakash makes antique gold and silver jewellery in his shop. He creates new items and also fixes the broken ones. He mainly gets work from foreign clients.
Om says that his family has been in jewellery manufacturing for a long time. His father was well-known in Udaipur for his gold earrings. Subsequently, he began producing silver bands, which also gained fame. These days, he enjoys making a variety of jewellery, such as rings, earrings, and so forth, and their business is mostly driven by demands of the tourists visiting Udaipur.
Om recounts an occasion in which a group of college students from Delhi visited his store, recorded the whole jewellery-making process, and took pictures and videos to submit to their university. He was thereafter called to Delhi, where his jewellery-making process was well admired and appreciated.
He explains that in order to create a nugget of gold or silver for jewellery, the metal must first be melted and then pounded with a hammer to give it various shapes and forms. Polishing is the final step in the creation of any kind of jewellery, including bracelets, rings, earrings, etc.
Remembering his early years, Om states that he did his education until the eighth grade and had an interest in jewellery-making from an early age.
He believes that he has always been blessed by Lord Mahadev, and driven by that deep belief, he goes to the famous Eklingji Temple on foot with his friends every Monday and on all ‘Purnimas’.
When asked about his ideals, Om says Lord Eklingnath is his primary inspiration and he always directs him in the right direction. He also looks up to his guru, Santosh Nath, who is a member of the ‘Nath Sampraday’ and gives him advice whenever he needs it.
Speaking about his struggles, Om states that although life presents obstacles constantly, he never gives up and instead worships Lord Mahadev, asking him to take away his problems. He became Gorakhnath’s disciple after meeting his Guru.
Talking about his achievements Om says that, with the blessings of Lord Eklingnath, he feels that his greatest accomplishment was installing the Kalash and laying the foundation for the Mahakaleshwar temple in Udaipur.
Om suggests that the ownership of art is only of the artist's and that art is not influenced by caste or religion. He thinks anybody may see art and learn about it too. No matter what sort of art is there, everyone should learn about it since it's the finest thing, he says.
