Nilay Singh Rathore is the co-founder of the music band - “Sukoon”, which performs in and around Udaipur.
Nilay was born and brought up in Udaipur. He did his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, where he, for the first time, engaged in music. He started playing Harmonium in school and later represented his school in various music competitions.
Until that time, Nilay didn’t know that he would be pursuing music as a career. But his obsession with music kept on growing till his college time when he met like-minded people who mooted the idea of starting a band.
However, Nilay’s journey was not an easy one. Being the eldest son of the family and coming from a middle-class family, it was deemed quite unorthodox to pursue music as a career. But his passion and talent broke all boundaries to allow him to keep going successfully.
Talking about “Sukoon”, Nilay says that it is a family in itself. The name “Sukoon” has been derived from their vision of finding and spreading peace through music. It is a five-member band, and all of them share an intimate bond. They also motivate and help each other out.
According to Nilay, education and experience both play an important role in whatever you choose to do. He says that good knowledge complimented by a zest for exploration is the ideal recipe for success in life.
Nilay says to the aspiring musicians that to pursue a career in the music industry, there is no predefined and structured path that you have to follow. It is all about finding yourself in whatever manner you feel like, you have to find your instrument and then explore your unique style. He says one thing, however, remains constant for everyone, which is to keep practicing.
Nilay says that this is the best time of his life. He is surrounded by good people and is doing what he wants to do, he says this is all he can ask for. When it comes to his favorite people, Nilay says one of them is Ankit - his band member and his best friend. He says they understand each other on a deep level and are always there for each other. His family is also his support system which keeps him going.
If given a chance to go back to his past and live it all over again through a Time Machine, Nilay would like to devote even more time to his music practice and wouldn’t change anything at all about his future as he is content with it.
Talking about the COVID crisis, Nilay says that on the bright side, it provided us with much-needed time and space for self-exploration. He says that we finally got time to do whatever we had always dreamt of doing but could not do due to being busy.
His mantra in life is that difference of opinions is acceptable but there should not be any harsh feelings about each other in our hearts. Speaking of his band, he says they spend a lot of time together practicing music and emboldening each other.
Nilay says that one can find them performing at the Banjara Restaurant, Shobhagpura on Saturdays. There they perform with various other musicians too. And they are trying to find more artists and create a community.
