Mrityunjay Mundra, Chief Academic Officer at The Stanvard Senior Secondary School, Udaipur, is leading an institution rooted in legacy while actively driving educational transformation.

Established in 1965 under the Saraswati Niketan Institution, the school was founded with a clear commitment—to deliver uncompromised quality education while nurturing every dimension of a student’s growth, including physical, mental, social, spiritual, and academic development. The core vision remains focused on shaping responsible individuals and future leaders of India.

Building on this foundation, the institution is now emphasizing innovation in pedagogy and classroom experience. The approach is centered on enabling students to think, inquire, explore, and grow beyond conventional learning methods. Coming from Udaipur, Mrityunjay completed his early schooling at The Stanvard Senior Secondary School Udaipur before moving to another institution for his higher classes. He later pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Symbiosis School of Economics, Pune, studying areas such as international economics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and mathematical economics. However, during this phase, he began to question the traditional structure of education, observing that both school and college systems were largely focused on examination performance rather than true understanding.

This realization marked a critical shift in his perspective, as he recognized the gap between academic scoring and the deeper knowledge required to excel in real life.

His academic shift marked a defining turning point. Choosing a non-traditional learning environment that emphasized thinking and “learning how to learn” transformed his understanding of education. He moved away from the idea of exam-centric success and began to see education as a lifelong process driven by curiosity, application, and purpose—something that shapes both professional competence and personal growth. This realization led him to develop a clear intent to contribute toward improving the education system in India.

Acting in this direction, he entered the public policy space and joined the Nation First Policy Research Centre as a Research Associate. During this period, he worked on significant projects in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Indian Knowledge System, and Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti. These initiatives focused on designing workshops to help students understand India’s traditional knowledge systems and their relevance in the modern world. This exposure provided him with deep insight into the richness of India’s ancient intellectual heritage and its potential role in shaping contemporary education.

Building on this foundation, he further explored ways to integrate traditional wisdom with modern systems, which eventually led him to pursue a Master’s degree in Education Leadership, Organizations, and Entrepreneurship from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. At Harvard, he focused on understanding educational systems, research-driven practices, and strategies for implementation within schools. The experience expanded his perspective on collaboration, partnerships, and system-level transformation, while reinforcing his long-term goal, to learn globally and implement those learnings within the Indian context.

At Stanvard, Mrityunjay Mundra is actively applying these insights by reshaping classroom practices. The focus is on creating learning environments centered around discussion, reflection, peer learning, and exploration rather than traditional examination-driven methods. He emphasizes moving beyond outdated, colonial-era models of rote learning and shifting toward an approach that builds values, ethics, critical thinking, and responsible citizenship alongside academic competence.

He also recognizes that challenges in education are not unique to India; every country continues to experiment and evolve its systems. In the current era of AI and rapid technological advancement, he believes education must move toward innovation, adaptability, and entrepreneurial thinking. The objective is to nurture individuals who are resilient, socially responsible, and capable of contributing meaningfully to a developed and self-reliant nation.

Drawing inspiration from multiple sources, he identifies three core ideals that have significantly shaped his thinking and approach toward education and society. The first is Acharya Chanakya, whose work, especially Arthashastra, he began exploring during his school years. The depth of Chanakya’s ideas left a lasting impression, particularly the principle of placing the nation above personal interests, which continues to influence his worldview.

The second major influence is Swami Vivekananda, whose teachings and philosophy instilled a strong sense of inner motivation and purpose. His ideas around self-belief, discipline, and pursuing one’s goals with clarity have played a crucial role in shaping a mission-driven mindset and sustaining long-term commitment toward larger objectives.

The third inspiration comes from Subhash Chandra Bose, whose leadership during pre-independence India exemplified resilience and the ability to navigate adversity with conviction. His approach of thinking beyond immediate limitations and working toward transformative change reinforced the importance of courage and solution-oriented thinking.

Building on these influences, he believes that India already possesses the knowledge, capability, and intellectual foundation required to emerge as a global knowledge leader. However, the responsibility lies significantly with educational institutions and society as a whole. Drawing parallels with the traditional Gurukul system he emphasizes the need to create ecosystems that prioritize talent, determination, and purpose over background or privilege. He highlights that even today, leading global institutions follow similar principles through scholarships and support systems, reinforcing the idea that accessible, value-driven education can nurture individuals committed to contributing meaningfully to society.

Reinforcing his philosophy, he draws motivation from two powerful ideas. One is Swami Vivekananda’s timeless line, “Arise, awake and stop not until your goal is reached,” which reflects relentless pursuit of purpose. The second comes from his dean at Harvard, who emphasized that the education and experiences they receive are not meant for themselves alone, but for those who could not be there, and that the world is waiting for them to step beyond the classroom and contribute meaningfully to those who need support to reach their highest potential.

Addressing parents that every child learns differently and therefore education must adapt to multiple intelligences rather than forcing a uniform approach. In this context, marks are not a true measure of ability, as they only reflect performance within a limited examination window rather than actual understanding or intellect.

Instead, he advocates for deeper engagement—where parents actively participate in their child’s learning by spending time, asking meaningful questions, and understanding how the child thinks and learns. This collaborative approach between parents and the school helps build a supportive environment, reducing pressure and preventing the development of self-doubt or inferiority in children. He highlights that a lack of support often leads to psychological barriers, where students begin to limit themselves, affecting both confidence and performance.

At Stanvard, the effort is to recognize and nurture the uniqueness of every child rather than treating all students in the same way. The school aims to design assessments and learning systems that genuinely reflect a student’s understanding, capabilities, and intellectual growth, ensuring that each learner is guided according to their individual strengths.

He further explains the critical role of mindset in shaping outcomes. A limiting mindset restricts students from reaching their full potential, lowering confidence and ambition, while a growth or learning mindset encourages continuous improvement, curiosity, and resilience. Students who develop this mindset view every situation as an opportunity to learn, enabling them to aim higher and move closer to their aspirations.
