Mohit Porwal is from Udaipur, Rajasthan. He has been working in Cognizant in London for the past two and a half years. However, he had joined the company right after college, some eleven years back. He has done his schooling from Udaipur and Graduation in Information Technology Engineering from Walchand Institute of Engineering, Solapur, Maharashtra.
Mohit is currently working in the Banking and Finance domain and testing technology. He has worked with clients like Lloyds and Barclays. He started with the Payment End-to-End Testing project and then moved on to run batches and then Database Testing. Currently, he is in Web Services API testing.
Mohit says that his struggle in life has been with the language. He did his entire schooling in Hindi Medium. However, Engineering was in English Medium and he had to put in a lot of effort. He says that he learned a lot from his friends in college. When he joined Cognizant, his hold on the language was still very weak. He saw people speaking fluent English and learned from them. He says that he has been dead honest about his work always and is still progressing and learning. He feels that only this dedication of his has helped him survive in foreign lands.
Mohit says that during the initial training days of his job, he used to say ‘yes’ to everyone and would then end up working late in the night. He slowly learned to say ‘no’ but emphasizes that every ‘No’ should come with a timeline like “I will do it in two weeks' time”. Mohit says that he has learned many things in his professional life which helps him in his personal life as well.
Mohit is fond of Cricket and considers Rahul Dravid as his inspiration. He feels that Rahul not only works on the field but also works hard beyond the field. He says that one has to be on the pitch in order to achieve anything in life. He says that one should utilize one’s capacity to the fullest.
Mohit feels that the only mistake he is doing presently is not upgrading himself and learning new technology which is emerging. He feels that not catching up with the latest technology impedes one’s growth in life.
Talking about the Industry situation, Mohit feels that majority of the things will be automated in the coming five years and manual working will decrease. Everything will work on digital platforms.
Mohit feels that the working culture is far better in India as compared to foreign countries. He says that even after working ten hours in India, one will still have the energy left to do something back at home. Interaction and colleagues’ bonding is better in India. However, he also feels that working timings are better in the UK and he gets out of office at around six and has plenty of time left to pursue other things.
Mohit urges the youth not to be fixated on any one job or field like IT or Engineering. He gives an example of his friend who has done Masters in Japanese language and travels to Japan time and again as a tourist guide and is earning a handsome amount of money by that. He says that Germany has opportunities for people who have done graduation in Sanskrit as well. He says that one should explore as much as possible before deciding on a particular field.
