Mitra Phukan is a novelist, fiction writer and translator from Guwahati, Assam.
Mitra belongs to Assam and has been working in this field for the last many years. She started her writing career in Guwahati. She had completed her education, which included schooling and college, in Shillong.
Recalling her childhood, Mitra says that she spent her childhood in various states like Bihar, UP, etc. due to the transferable job of his father. She has also lived in various parts of Africa and values and treasures her experiences from there. She shares that since childhood, her true friends have been books in different languages.
Talking about her journey, Mitra says that books have always been a part of her journey. She initially started writing for a small local newspaper and also began to write stories for women’s magazines, which encouraged her to progress further in the field of writing. Afterwards, she started writing children's stories, as her children were the inspiration. Then she started writing novels, including children's novels and adult novels. She also did various translations from Assamese to English and also did editing work by putting together a collection of stories.
When asked about mistakes, Mitra says she believes that mistakes teach us many things and also make us grow. She sees mistakes as opportunities to grow because she has learned so much from them.
Advising aspirants to her field, Mitra says that to enter this field, it is important to have your own opinion and find out unique ways to express your feelings. A lot of reading is required to relate to and understand the stories. She also believes that one should also value and seek out experiences to achieve the desired goals in this field.
Mitra shares that there have been many inspirations for her in the field of writing, like the iconic contemporary writers.
In her spare time, she loves to listen to music, as she has also been a professional classical music musician. She also likes reading, travelling, cooking, and eating food.
To beat stress, Mitra goes to her garden and gazes at the flowers and trees.
Mitra’s life mantra is to try to be kind to others and make a little difference in their lives.
