Meera Das is a renowned Odissi Exponent, Dancer, Teacher, Performer, and Choreographer. She has been in this profession for forty-two years. She laid the foundation of ‘The Gunjan Dance Academy’ in Cuttack, twenty-five years ago, which has become a huge success.
Meera was born and brought up in a family with a humble background in a village in Odisha, which saw many struggles in life. She received her school education from her village itself. Later on, she got selected to the Odissi Research Center in Bhubaneswar, where she took formal Odissi dance training under the guidance of her Guru, Kelu Charan Mohapatra.
Reminiscing about her childhood memories, Meera says that from a very young age, she was more interested in music and dance than in toys. Gradually, she advanced in the field of music and dance, which was a dream of her parents.
Talking about her role models, Meera says her parents are her biggest inspirations for encouraging her to pursue a career in dance and her Guru, Kelu Charan Mohapatra is her role model for making her reach where she is today.
Regarding her accomplishments, Meera says that her biggest achievement was when her guruji selected her as the best student among all his students to perform at the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi as a Soloist. Besides, representing India in sixty-two other countries and getting citizenship of Oklahoma is no less than an achievement for her. Along with this, receiving a Junior and Senior Fellowship from the Government of India’s Ministry of Culture and getting declared as an ‘Outstanding Artist of ICCL’, under which she has done many foreign tours as a Cultural Ambassador is a matter of pride for her.
Meera likes to spend her free time practicing dance, cooking, doing household chores, and taking care of her family.
Advising all the dancers, Meera says that if you want to make a career in dance, you must love and live it. Because when you love your work, it comes out more colorful and shining, which connects your audience with you and ultimately makes you a better performer.
