Maya Singh is the Chief IT Technician and Operator at the Economics and Sociology Department of Mohanlal Sukhadia University. She manages all the information technology-related work in the arts section of the college.
Speaking about her childhood, Maya shares that her grandfather was a headmaster at the government school she studied at. Furthermore, her father was also a teacher at the school. Though Maya had an innate interest in technological fields, she decided to pursue the humanities. She completed her BA and MA.
Subsequently, after completing her bachelor’s degree, she got married. Her husband and in-laws encouraged her to finish her master's degree. For a few years, she worked for Indian Oil and DTDC courier services. Her father and husband were highly supportive of her at a time when society was conservative and women who were allowed to work in any profession were looked down upon.
Talking about her achievements, Maya shares that she received the Pratibha Patil Rashtrapati Award for her excellence and proficiency in academics.
Sharing her pandemic experience, Maya says that they used computers and mobile phones as a medium to communicate. The IT business seems to have a much broader variety of people with whom it interacts in a more personal way. The internet makes it simple to get feedback or involvement. As a result, Maya felt she played a significant role in coordinating and advising teachers on how to properly take online classes and retain communication with their students.
According to her, leadership skills can be learned through experience. A leader's team should be developed. A leader's job is to listen to everyone's problems and come up with a solution that benefits everyone on the team. Maya also aims to improve women's education, with a particular focus on overall literacy, so that they can obtain better jobs after finishing high school and college.
While Maya was growing up, she had to deal with social criticism because education for a girl child in India was not taken seriously at the time and sending a girl child to school was not common. However, she believes that the present generation is very perceptive to gender equality in professional fields, and more opportunities are now available for female children.
Maya is grateful to her father and husband, as they motivate and inspire her in every small way. Her father is her role model, as he is a diligent educator who believes in building a better future for the country, especially for females who do not receive employment opportunities.
