Manika Devi, a freelance artist based in Guwahati, Assam, has had an inspiring journey in the field of Fine Arts. She graduated in Printmaking from the Government Arts College, Guwahati University and earned her master's degree in 2000 from MS University, Baroda.
Among her accomplishments, Manika Devi is particularly proud of receiving the Junior Fellowship, which helped her complete her master's degree. She is also an elected member of the prestigious Lalit Kala Akademi and has been selected for various national and international workshops. Her artwork and design work have been recognized by notable organizations, which she considers major milestones in her career.
Reflecting on her path, Manika Devi shares that pursuing a career in fine arts wasn't something she had initially planned. As a child, she frequently participated in art competitions, and it was her teacher who urged her elder sister to enrol her in an art school due to her natural talent. Along with her interest in sports, Manika continued with art school until the tenth grade.
When it came to choosing a career, she decided to pursue her passion for art and joined an arts college. Her journey had its challenges, but her determination led her to pursue a master's degree in Fine Arts at Baroda. During her time there, she was awarded the Junior Fellowship, which allowed her to further enhance her skills. After returning to Assam, she joined a fine arts organization on her own merit, continuing to build her career.
Manika Devi acknowledges that her biggest regret is not exploring opportunities outside her hometown, where resources in fine arts were limited. She believes that this decision might have limited her exposure but also emphasizes that she learned valuable lessons from her mistakes.
Manika Devi credits her father as her role model, having taught her the importance of discipline in work. She also acknowledges the support of many people who encouraged her to gain diverse experiences along the way.
Looking ahead, Manika Devi dreams of continuing her work in fine arts and hopes to inspire and involve more people in the field to contribute to its growth and development.
