Mahendra Kumar Sharma was born in Bisalpur in the Tonk district of Rajasthan. His father was in the Border Security Force. Mahendra did his primary education from the BSF Campus in Jodhpur. He did his graduation from Jaipur. Then he completed his PGDCA in Computer Application and also did a Certificate Course from the Market Research Society of India.
Mahendra has been in the field of Research since 1996. He was a State-Coordinator in the Indian Institute of Wealth Management and worked in the fields of Primary Health and Education. He has also worked in coordination with Population Services International to create awareness about Family Planning and Population Control.
Mahendra shares that his interest in the field of Social Service was from a very early age. He always wanted to help people and work for society. He established the ‘Samaj Evam Jansankhya Shodh Sansthan’ with the motive of creating awareness about population control and women's health. He also founded the ‘Rajasthan Market Research Institute’ to work in the same field.
Mahendra says that through his NGO his team has conducted counseling sessions in over fifty villages about population control measures, childbirth spacing, and female feticides. He shares that many people still want a male child in their family and hence they keep having children till a boy is born. This often results in depleting financial conditions and deterioration of the mother’s health in the family. They try to create awareness that fewer children open prospects of better living conditions and a good education. They conduct counseling sessions for this issue and are also seeing positive results.
Sharing an interesting case of a village from Jodhpur, Mahendra says that villagers in that village had decided to never bow down to anyone in life. However, whenever a Groom came to marry a Bride, they would have to bow down in respect. Hence, the people from that village started killing female children and only male children were found there. Mahendra says that they conducted sessions in this village and now are seeing positive results.
Mahendra says that working in the Tribal Belt of Rajasthan had many difficulties and the major one was language problems. It was hard to communicate with them and reaching out to tribal people was a tough task. Funding issues have also come during this journey of his. Mahendra says that sometimes he has invested his own money and sometimes he has received grants from the government and other organizations.
He says that they have worked for health-related problems as well. They have traveled tens of kilometers to reach interior villages with no proper connectivity or health infrastructure. He says that children are malnourished in such places and old parents are left behind in pitiable conditions by migrated children. Mahendra says that working for such people always makes him feel responsible and proud.
Mahendra informs that he has been applauded and motivated by National and International organizations and Universities like UNICEF, MIT, and IIM, Kolkata. His pre-planning strategy before starting any project is also appreciated by many.
During the Covid Pandemic, Mahendra says that everything was disturbed and turned upside-down. From children to working professionals, everyone was affected by it. His NGO worked for relief work by providing food packets and Covid essentials. He says that when everyone was afraid of this disease and no one used to come out to help Covid patients, he took one of his relatives to the hospital without worrying about his own health and helped save a life. Mahendra says that helping others and working for society gives pleasure to him. He feels that everyone should work for the sake of humanity.
Mahendra also expresses his gratitude towards IIHM President Dr. Prahlad Rai Sodani for motivating him in every step of his professional life. He feels that the way Dr. Sodani is working selflessly for society, he also wants to do the same.
He thinks that there is nothing like a leader or boss. He says that he works as a team member and never lets anyone feel that he is a boss or their leader. Mahendra feels that working together motivates the team and creates a good connection between them.
Talking about the field of Social Service, Mahendra says that parents should encourage their children to enter this area and work for the needy as much as they can. He feels that people who are well-to-do and economically stable should come forward and help small NGOs as they lack funds and cannot pay well to their members. He says that bringing a smile to the face of a poor person is really satisfying.
To the youth, Mahendra says that they should work towards breaking orthodox traditions of the past and creating a progressive world. He feels that today’s youth have decision-making power, mind, and the ability to do so. He says that any decision should be taken keeping in mind: ‘Desh’, ‘Kaal’, ‘Samay’, and ‘Paristhiti’.
In his free time, Mahendra likes to scroll through Social Media sites and learn about other NGOs and what they are doing in their respective fields. He also likes to read books.
If given a chance to go back in time, Mahendra would like to relive his student life and enjoy life with his friends. He would also like to relive his memories of village life.
