Madhur Dixit heads a group of engineers building the next version of web browsers for Microsoft. He has an experience of eighteen years working in the corporate realm in different companies in different positions. From being a Software Engineer to a Group Manager, he has worked at several levels in multiple companies like Microsoft, Google, and Uber. He believes in building products and services which create a worldwide impact.
Madhur says he started his career with Oracle and worked there for a couple of years before switching to Microsoft. He worked at Microsoft for thirteen years. Later, he switched to Uber in Hyderabad and worked there for a year. He learned a lot at Uber and switched back to Microsoft.
Madhur shares that since his childhood, he was inclined towards academics. Though he was not a high scoring student, he transformed after tenth grade. He says some of the best teachers in his life were those who taught him from his tenth grade up to his graduation. Madhur went to Kota in 1997-1999 to prepare for IIT entrance coaching. He believes that good guidance and curiosity to learn go a long way in a student’s future. Moreover, finding your area of interest and working towards it should be your prime motive. Madhur is the first engineer in his family due to his natural inclination towards Science and Mathematics.
Following his graduation from IIT, Madhur worked at Oracle. It was during that time he realised that in the real world, it is more about building and having the right skill-set rather than being an IITian. Therefore, he re-learned programming on Experts-Exchange and prepared to apply for positions in big and more popular firms. He applied to Microsoft and got the job. After getting into Microsoft, he got consistently promoted to higher positions. He got three promotions in five years. However, Madhur realised that consistent and frequent promotions make an employee uninterested in the firm. He felt that one must start with a new company and develop technical skills during the initial stages.
Talking about struggles, Madhur says he belongs to Jaipur and got admitted to IIT-Chennai. He says the hardest part was travelling to Chennai via train. It took him thirty-six hours of train travel from Jaipur. The language and humid weather in Chennai were also the two biggest problems for him.
Madhur is an ambitious worker who believes that working in big firms is about creating a good impact. Recollecting his mistakes, he feels that one should be thoughtful in life about what they want to do after they graduate. He wishes to have joined a Masters Program in an international university like his other friends. Moreover, joining a big company in the initial stages of a career is another mistake, he thinks.
Madhur feels that one cannot be stagnant in big companies. One grows along with the company.
Madhur suggests that one must start creating their portfolio from the college level. Lots of companies host open events or do open-source projects. The idea behind that is to keep learning. He believes that what one does today, he gets rewarded for it in the coming time.
Madhur thinks that building a solid network of friends and ex-managers has helped him grow and do better in his career. Figures like Elon Musk and many others inspire him to think big.
Madhur loves to do gardening and make an aquarium at home during his free time. After losing his dad in 2015, he realised the importance of health and started with long-distance running.
Madhur believes in the quote, “Understand your biggest fear and how you would deal with it”. It helps him to make better decisions and grow in life and career.
