A musician, Bhageerathi is determined to carry forward the legacy of her family. She has also worked as a professor of music for the last 34 years.

M.A. Bhageerathi is a Musician, Musicologist, retired controller and Registrar at Tamil Nadu Music.

Bhageerathi shares that her grandfather had composed the song ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’.  She says that her grandfather was the first to introduce the violin to Hindustani music. Her father and uncle had been engaged in Carnatic and Hindustani music. She is proud to belong to the family of such great artists and has learned bhajans from her grandfather and various music compositions from them. She learned vocal music  and violin under the guidance of her gurus.

Talking about her achievements, Bhageerathi says that she has worked as a professor of music for the past 34 years and has been the head of department at Queen Mary's College. She has specialized in musical prabhandas. She has produced more than 30 PhDs. Two of her students had completed their PhDs under her guidance. She feels elated that both her daughters have independently built their careers and are living a stable life with their husbands. She has sung 1330 verses for the Thirukkural app by CICT. She has also received awards from the Tamil government. She feels happy that many of her students are at the peak of their careers.

When asked about her role models, Bhageerathi says that she is blessed to have learned under the guidance of her gurus and elders. She thanks her ancestors and family deity for everything that she has achieved in her life.

Bhageerathi’s life mantra is to imbibe the knowledge that you know and always think well of others, as only a good mind can produce good music.
