As a Social Worker, Lalit has come far in life and never misses out on any opportunity to help people and the community in general through his phenomenal contributions.

Lalit Kumar Purohit is a Program Administrator at Citta Education Foundation India.

He was born in Bikaner and raised in Jaisalmer and completed his education in Jaisalmer itself. Thereafter, Lalit completed his Bachelors in Arts at GNV University and also completed a Diploma in Mass Communication. He also appeared in the REET exam and did his Bachelors in Education to pursue his interest in Teaching. Lalit then joined the America-India Foundation where he enjoyed working in the field and helping people and thereafter decided to make his career in NGOs. This prompted Lalit to do his MA in Sociology.

Lalit shares that while he was in Jaipur, he happened to meet an SDM who introduced him to his NGO which also inspired him to work for the community. So after 2008, Lalit started his own NGO under the name Yuva Social Friends Society and ran it for seven years. He adds that he did face funding issues and realized that political power is prime to receive funding. He failed to mobilize funds and decided to join some NGO to continue helping people. He has worked on projects for the UNDP and has also given his services as a Coordinator for the Zila Parishad. Thereafter, Lalit got married in 2013 and had family responsibilities to fulfil so he opened his printing shop in 2017 and continues to run it with the support of his staff.

Lalit shares that gathering resources for NGOs has been a challenge for him since there are many provisions involved to receive government funding. On the personal front, he says that living in a joint family, he didn’t really have to face any major struggles in life.

Talking about the pandemic days, Lalit shares that since his village faced issues in oxygen supply, he played an active role to make it accessible for the people. He considers his contributions to his community as an achievement and takes pride in it. Lalit also made it possible to plant trees in Jaisalmer with support from various organizations. He shares that he has received inspiration from his parents which motivated him to contribute his bit to the community in general.

Lalit is fond of reading books and has read a few by Mahatma Gandhi and Jiddu Krishnamurti. He feels that Education is more important than Experience which comes much later. He says that education plays a role in one’s personality development and a combination of both aids in the overall development of an individual.

Lalit feels that leadership does not imply acting superior but it is treating everyone at the same level, which also facilitates better outputs. He adds that a true leader should also be considerate of their subordinates’ issues and befriend them. Lalit feels that a leader should bring out the best in us and provide guidance from time to time.

In his leisure time and especially during the pandemic, Lalit learnt shorthand and he always believes in doing something productive and meaningful. He also indulges in book reading or learning something new whenever free.

For aspiring NGO enthusiasts, Lalit suggests studying Sociology and pursuing Masters in Social Work, after which one can start doing field visits. He adds that one needs to understand societal issues and help the NGO act upon them.

If Lalit could go back in a Time Machine, he would like to revisit 2010 and prepare for Rajasthan Administrative Services to help society better.

His Success Mantra is to never lose the hope of winning despite failures in life. He suggests the youth to never give up and keep their vision alive. Lalit believes in the saying “When God closes one door, he opens another.”
