Kulwinder Singh is a freelance artist flourishing in his creativity with watercolors, oil paintings, and acrylics. Additionally, he is also a poet who explores his imagination, pursuing his passion with words alongside his art.

Singh has participated in open mics and district-level competitions, but he believes no award can measure the joy that comes from building meaningful relationships. He values his connections with students, mentors, fellow artists, juniors, clients, and friends as his true achievements. To him, awards are merely material, while the people he earns along the way hold real significance. He also considers personal growth—painting better than he once did—as a noteworthy accomplishment.

Kulwinder Singh has participated in numerous group art exhibitions across cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Shimla, and Chandigarh. He hopes to hold a solo exhibition in the near future. Singh’s artwork is primarily sold online via Instagram, with strong support from his friends. His art has reached clients not only in India but also internationally in countries such as France, Australia, Singapore, the UK, the USA, Canada, and Uganda. Singh is grateful to his clients for displaying his artwork in their spaces and for the encouragement they provide.

Reflecting on his early days, Kulwinder Singh shares that he hails from Paonta Sahib, a small town in Himachal Pradesh close to Chandigarh and Dehradun. He was inclined towards painting since his childhood, inspired by his elder brother, Gurpreet Singh, who was good at drawing and painting. Singh recollects drawing sketches in books during his school days and also drawing inspiration from his art teacher, Mr. Kulveer Kishan, an abstract artist who further fueled his curiosity in the subject.

Originally from Surajpur, Kulwinder studied in his village until 5th grade, then attended Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, 40 km from home. It was there that he discovered his love for art under the guidance of his art guru, Kulveer Kishan. Known for his artwork at school, Singh even took responsibility for the art subject. Despite his passion, he couldn’t convince his parents to let him pursue a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) and instead completed a B.Pharm. Nevertheless, his creativity persisted; during college, he began writing poetry and continued painting with poster colors. He also desired to pursue painting not professionally, but for his own personal interest once he started earning.

Singh completed his degree in Pharmacy and started working in the pharmaceutical industry. He worked for three years and alongside started pursuing his interest in acrylic painting, learning from YouTube and buying the relevant materials required for it.

Five years ago, on the day of Shivratri, Singh put his hands on canvas and has not looked back ever since. He recollects doing his job during the day and pursuing his creative interest in painting at night. Once COVID struck and lockdown was imposed, Singh got enough time and freedom to delve deeper into his art. Destiny favoured him and he met his art gurus, Sikandar Singh from Chandigarh, Achintya Hajra from Kolkata, Vikrant Shitore and Nishikant Palande from Maharashtra, and others who have positively shaped his journey in the art field.

When asked about his role models, Kulwinder Singh says he draws inspiration from his art gurus, whom he once admired from afar on social media, secretly wishing for their guidance. Today, he feels fortunate to have received both artistic insights and valuable life lessons from them about the life and nature of an artist. He holds all his mentors in high regard, crediting them for his success in the art field.

Singh draws inspiration from the Punjabi song "Oh Shera Uth Zara" by the Waris Brothers, which he listens to whenever he’s stressed, as it recharges him.

He laments starting his artistic journey late in life at 29, a realization that inspired him to write:

"देरी से हूँ,

पर हूँ राह पर उस मंज़िल की ओर,

जिसे मैं सपनो में देखा करता था…"

Though he began late, Singh is grateful for being able to follow his passion, which has now become his full-time career. Writing has also grown to be a source of joy for him, as he captures his thoughts in poetry across themes like romance, motivation, and nature, maintaining a personal diary. While he devotes most of his time to painting, he continues to nurture his poetic side in his free moments.

Though Singh graduated in a different subject, his interest and inclination towards art continued to persist. Following his artistic interest, Singh began with the acrylic medium, learning from platforms like YouTube. Gradually, he connected with drawing masters who encouraged him to explore other mediums like oil and watercolour painting. His favourite medium is watercolour, especially in the landscape category. Kulwinder Singh particularly enjoys drawing heritage monuments inspired by India’s rich cultural heritage.

Singh is also a part of 'Kala Aarambh,' an artist group which travels to places like Banaras, Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan for live painting sessions. These locations inspire the artists, helping them refine their skills and express creativity in their studios. Kulwinder also offers one-on-one art classes online, preferring students to be 15+ years of age with a little understanding of art as a subject. His classes are also open to people who are in their 40s and 50s and wish to pursue art as a hobby or work upon their artistic skills.

In his message to aspiring artists, Kulwinder Singh highlights that many abilities, like our senses, are God-given, and while some people have strong observational skills, to excel in art, one must continuously work on their skills. He dispels the myth that artistic talent is only innate, advising beginners that there are no shortcuts in the art world. Singh also differentiates between fame and true artistry, saying that once an artist masters their craft, the real journey begins, especially when skill is combined with emotion. He urges artists to build a strong foundation, reminding them to "Go slow, but go strong."

Singh is often asked by aspiring artists about a career and earning potential in art professions. He explains that to succeed in any field, one must strive to be the best, noting that not all MBBS graduates become successful doctors. Singh emphasizes that practice, consistency, and strong foundational skills are key to becoming a great artist, and with these qualities, one need not worry about opportunities in the art field.

Kulwinder Singh advises the youth that if they truly want something and work hard for it, they will certainly achieve it. He suggests keeping self-doubt at bay and emphasizes the importance of confidence, which ultimately leads to success in all endeavors.
