An Odissi dancer and teacher, Krishna keeps following her passion for dance despite her family responsibilities and is also offering free training to underprivileged kids.

Krishna Chettri is a classical Odissi dance teacher and a performer from Guwahati. She is the founder of Jagannath Dance Academy. She also offers free training to underprivileged kids. She has an M.A. in English, an L.L.M., and an L.LB.

Describing her childhood, Krishna says she was born and brought up in Guwahati. She had an inclination towards dance since her childhood. Initially, she started learning under the guidance of her guru late Garima Huzarika, at Mitali Kala Kendra. She was learning dance along with her studies. She finished both her school and college education in Guwahati. Her first stage performance was when she was only twelve years old on the occasion of the silver jubilee of Assamese Cinema.

Krishna claims that she was the first from the north-east region to receive ‘Visharad’ in Odissi dance from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. She also learned ‘Sattriya Nritya’ which is a major Assamese classical dance.

Krishna has performed her classical dance on various occasions with her guru and her group. She says one of her most memorable achievements was when she and her group performed at the 83rd birthday celebration of Sri Satya Sai at his ashram.

Speaking about her mistakes, Krishna says she believes her biggest mistake was pursuing law degrees. She thinks that because she is not practicing law presently, she could have spent those five years too in the dance field.

When asked about her role models, Krishna says she considers her guru late Garima Hazarika as her role model. She has learned to be disciplined and to give importance to rehearsals from her, which makes every performance better.

To reduce her stress and to relax herself, Krishna practices her dance. She thinks every artist’s art makes them relaxed and stress-free.

Krishna mentions integrity and commitment as her life mantras. According to her, success can be achieved in any activity if we put our all into it and are completely honest about it.
