Kirti was born and brought up in Madhya Pradesh. Her father was in a transferable government post, so she was raised in different cities of MP. Kirti says that she belongs to a conservative family and growing up she was only given career choices like engineering or medicine. And doing makeup or modeling was something that her family never really appreciated.
Kirti did her post graduation followed by an MBA. Then she worked with an MNC for about four years. Later, when she got married, she came to Udaipur to her in-laws’ house. She says that since there weren’t any jobs that could do justice to her profile, she thought of following her passion for makeup and then to convert it into her profession.
Kirti shares that, since her childhood she would be fascinated by Bollywood actresses and their makeup styles. As a kid, she would save her pocket money to buy lipsticks and other makeup items. Since none in her family knew how to do makeup, she would be the go-to person every time someone would need to do makeup. Continuing her childhood passion for makeup, she is now a freelance makeup artist.
During the Covid pandemic, she thought of capitalising on her free time and she started learning the art of makeup. Initially, she learnt it from a friend of hers and later she did some courses both online and offline.
Kirti says that from the outset the makeup industry may look glamorous but once you go into the reality it is totally different. It’s filled with a lot of challenges. People still don’t consider it as a respectable profession. But she believes that doing makeup gives you confidence and inner strength. She says that when we are already beautiful then what’s wrong in making ourselves look even more beautiful to be presentable.
Kirti says that it may seem that a woman is not working when she is not doing any professional job, but contrary to that a woman is always working, be it taking care of her loved ones or household chores, which is often not recognised. After her marriage, when she was doing any professional job, she thought that she was not adding anything new to her repertoire. And, at the age of 32, with a toddler to take care of, she decided to be a makeup artist. Initially, she faced skepticism from her family, as it was totally new for her, but nevertheless her family supported her.
Talking about struggles in her life, Kirti says that taking care of her toddler and attending online classes was a bit challenging for her. At times, she would be late in her classes as she had to take care of her daughter. She says that doing bridal makeup isn’t that easy, sometimes brides are late and she has to wait for hours. But she always tries to remain patient however long the working hours may be.
Kirti debunked the myth that makeup is meant only for brides. She says that now-a-days makeup is irrespective of gender. It’s equally meant for men and women and working professionals.
Kirti is optimistic about the future of the makeup industry. She says that as the Bollywood and Wedding industries are growing so is the demand for makeup artists. In addition, now everyone wants to learn how to do makeup to look their best.
Kirti says that there is a lot to learn about makeup. One can never achieve perfection in it. She too keeps on learning something new from different sources.
Kirti believes that it’s never too late to do anything. Though she says that had she started doing makeup professionally in her early twenties, she would be in a much better position now.
Kirti thinks that a single person doesn’t have all the qualities. So she doesn’t consider anyone as her role model. Instead she learns from the good qualities of everyone that she meets.
Kirti has no regrets in her life. She says that she is happy and content with her life and even if given a chance to go back in time, she wouldn’t want to change anything.
Kirti’s life mantra is, Just get up and go for it. She advises that whatever happens in your life, you always have to stand up and fight the situation.
