Kamal Khawar has been a photographer for the past twenty-five years.
Kamal hails from Almora, a town in Uttarakhand.
Recollecting the formative years of his life, Kamal shares that he was born at the campus of Pantnagar University in the undivided state of UP as his father worked there. He says he remembers that his entire childhood was spent at the campus of the university itself. He completed his schooling from Pantnagar, which is now a town in Uttarakhand.
Sharing about how he took to photography, Kamal says that initially, he learned photography from his father. He began by capturing pictures with his father’s roll film camera. Later, he learned photography from books. He says he learned photography majorly from his father and his own experience also helped him refine his photography skills.
Kamal says that it was a major change and transition for him when he switched from a roll film camera to a digital camera. He says photography in the times of roll film cameras was not as easy as it’s today with digital cameras.
Talking about the challenges he had to face in his life, Kamal says that when he started out as a photographer, initially, often he had to struggle monetarily as he would not have many paid photography assignments. Besides, losing his only camera that he got from his father was also a challenge for him.
Kamal is of the opinion that you should never mix your passion with your profession. He says if you pursue your passion as your profession then you can’t really enjoy it. He shares that he does landscape photography out of passion and pursues wedding photography as his profession.
To youngsters aspiring to pursue photography, Kamal advises them to keep reading about it as it’s essential to know the theoretical aspects of it. Besides, he tells them that nowadays it’s become easy to photograph with digital cameras. But he advises them to handle their gear with care. Furthermore, he appreciates the work that today’s young photographers are doing.
In his spare time, Kamal likes to go trekking and camping with his family and friends and do landscape photography during his excursions.
