Jaya Boro, Assistant Professor at Visva Bharati University, has made a remarkable journey in the art of Ceramic and Glass Design. With a Bachelor in Fine Arts, Advanced Diploma in Painting, and a Certificate in Pottery, she has turned her passion into a flourishing career. Today, she proudly shares her expertise with students while continuing to grow as an artist.

Jaya Boro currently serves as an Assistant Professor in Ceramic and Glass Design at Silpa Sadana, Visva Bharati University, Shantiniketan, West Bengal.

Originally from Guwahati, Assam, Jaya Boro’s fascination with ceramic design blossomed from a young age. Her passion led her to pursue a Bachelor in Fine Arts and an Advanced Diploma in Painting, as well as a Certificate Course in Pottery and Ceramic from the very institution where she now teaches.

Reflecting on her early years, Jaya Boro fondly recalls a childhood filled with warmth and love. Growing up in a neighborhood of just three houses, she and her siblings, along with other children, were cherished and pampered by everyone. She has particularly fond memories of the kids' club nearby, where she often spent time engaging in creative activities, laying the foundation for her artistic journey.

Jaya Boro’s path towards becoming an artist started in her school days. While in the sixth grade, she joined a drawing class with a friend, a step that helped hone her artistic skills. Her parents played an integral role in this journey, offering unwavering support despite having no background in art or any particular interest in the field. Jaya Boro emphasizes how, even though there was no tradition of artistry in her family, her parents never discouraged her from following her passion for art. After completing her graduation in Fine Arts, Jaya's commitment to higher education led her to the position she holds today, a fact that fills both her and her parents with immense pride.

As a dedicated artist and teacher, Jaya Boro is deeply committed to continuously developing her own skills while sharing her knowledge with her students. She finds fulfilment in both her personal growth and in mentoring the next generation of artists.

When it comes to reflecting on mistakes, Jaya Boro admits that she was not particularly fond of academics during her school years, with History being her least favourite subject. In fact, she failed her twelfth-grade exams, a result of her aversion to academic studies. However, she now sees this as a turning point that steered her towards the art world. Interestingly, Boro finds herself teaching History to her students today, a subject she once fled from, reminding her of the irony and lessons from her past.

Speaking about her achievements, Jaya Boro humbly considers her current position as an Assistant Professor as her greatest success. She takes pride in her career and is determined to keep growing and evolving in her field.

Jaya Boro credits much of her success to the teachers who guided her along the way. She fondly remembers a school teacher who, rather than scolding her for drawing during a Geography class, encouraged her father to allow her to pursue art. Likewise, her college professors recognized and nurtured her talent, motivating her to push her boundaries. Alongside her teachers, Jaya Boro draws inspiration from her husband, her family, and close friends, all of whom have supported her on her journey.

In her free time, Jaya Boro loves spending time in flower gardens or working with clay, two activities that bring her peace and joy.

To combat feelings of stress or depression, she immerses herself in her work and finds solace in being with her students.

Jaya Boro offers advice to aspiring ceramic designers and potters, stressing the importance of willpower and determination. She encourages students to deeply understand the properties of clay, as this knowledge is crucial in mastering the art of pottery. Whether through formal education or self-learning, Boro believes that with a strong will, anyone can achieve success in the field of ceramics and design.
