Jaswant Singh Chouhan is an emerging hotelier and the general manager of Hotel Crimson Park Shree Kanak, Udaipur.
Jaswant hails from a small village near Agra, Uttar Pradesh. He started his career at the Taj Krishna in Hyderabad and worked across various prominent hotels like Club Mahindra, Park Plaza, and Fern Group, as well as on cruises throughout the world. Currently, he has been working as the general manager of Hotel Crimson Park for the last 2+ years.
Born into a farmer's family, Jaswant recalls his childhood memories of bunking school, playing cricket, and getting punished for that. He was always a naughty child who loved to play cricket. But now, due to his job profile, he isn’t able to visit his hometown much or spend time with his family.
When asked about his struggles, Jaswant recalls facing several barriers and serving rigorous training periods of six months in all four major departments. He recalls the incident when Telangana was separated from Andhra Pradesh and there were riots everywhere. It was during that time that he worked 38 hours at a stretch. Times like these have trained him to work hard to ace his career.
Advising young aspirants coming to this field, Jaswant mentions that after senior secondary education, we can go for a degree or a diploma course in hotel management. However, nowadays, degrees are preferred more than the latter. This field has various departments, wherein the major departments are the front office, housekeeping, service, kitchen departments, etc. He explains that, along with basic theoretical knowledge, practical knowledge contributes more to your growth in your career.
Talking about the COVID-19 era, Jaswant says that the tourism industry was the most impacted back then. But he also believes this industry will grow at three times the rate it went down. He learned to cook and, most importantly, got an ample amount of time to spend with his family.
In his free time, Jaswant likes to cook with his wife. He also likes riding bikes with his friends in his free time.
When asked about education and experience, Jaswant thinks that in his industry, both aspects are equally important. He adds that both can help aspirants excel in this field.
Jaswant believes that it is more important to be a leader than a boss. He adds that if the team works in unity, the leadership will prove fruitful. He also asserts the importance of discipline and loyalty in this line of work and advises people to always be patient and polite with their coworkers.
In his personal life, Jaswant considers his parents to be his role models. However, in his professional life, he looks up to his teacher, Karanveer Singh Chauhan, as his role model. He has learned a lot from him about this industry and aspires to follow in his footsteps in the industry diligently.
