Jaivardhan Singh Chundawat has his roots in Rajsamand. He has been in Udaipur for the past twenty-five years now. A hotelier by profession, he has been running his family business and is the owner of Amet Haveli working with a team of seventy members. Jaivardhan has done his schooling at Mayo College and has spent almost thirteen years in a boarding school. He completed his degree in Hotel Management from IHM, Aurangabad.
Jaivardhan shares that he opted for Arts back in school since he was very much into painting and mesmerized by the life of painters like Raja Ravi Verma who had done paintings of Maharana Pratap and Fateh Singh. However, being in the hotel industry since his younger days, he decided to do Hotel Management to run his family business. He shares that the foundation of the Amrai restaurant was laid by his grandfather in 1998 and he is the third generation who is taking the legacy forward.
Discussing the challenges he has faced in his journey, Jaivardhan shares that it was a difficult deal for him to change the mindset of his staff members who have been working in the hotel for more than twenty years. He feels that the transition and incorporating new ideas in the process was quite challenging. However, he always consults his elders for any guidance owing to the experience they carry with them.
Talking about his childhood, he shares that he had been an average student neither too notorious nor too studious.
Apart from his business, Jaivardhan likes to indulge in lemon plantation back in his village. He shares that Rajsamand being the hub of white marble has not catered to the needs of the environment which has hampered wildlife, owing to which he initially planned to construct a private wildlife sanctuary and get the local animals in Aravali to live over there.
Jaivardhan’s role model is his grandfather since he came up with the idea of having a hotel and a restaurant and always focused on keeping the core while renovating it in 1998. Talking about development in terms of tourism, Jaivardhan believes that people resist change but development comes with changes and Udaipur has various opportunities when it comes to tourism.
Talking about his COVID days, Jaivardhan shares that the hotel and tourism industry was hit the worst since international flights were cancelled and he also had to let go of certain plans he had for the year ahead.
If given an opportunity to travel back in time, he would like to relive his school days. Jaivardhan believes that experience matters the most since education just teaches you the basics which are not enough.
As a message to the aspiring hoteliers, Jaivardhan shares that one has to struggle and earn it since the road which looks like a luxury is not easy and has hidden challenges involved in terms of management and unforeseen events like COVID.
In his leisure time, Jaivardhan likes to travel, and be amid nature and wildlife. He likes to explore new cultures and has travelled around 15 countries by now with Japan being his best tour. He feels that Japan is not only at the top when it comes to technology, but they have carried along with them their roots, culture and tradition.
