Gurkirat Singh Gill works as a Production Engineer and a Consultant at Cricket.com and as a Cricket Analyst at Gilly Cricket. He calls himself a cricket enthusiast and talks about cricket professionally on various social media shows and platforms.
He believes that sports teach us much more than any classroom. He suggests everyone play at least one sport, as it can change your life. Through sports, one learns about teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and dedication. He says that cricket has been his biggest teacher, allowing him to open up and reach a wider audience. By talking about the game, he can break perceptions, help people understand and view the game differently, and learn about the sport himself. This provides him with fulfilment and satisfaction.
Gurkirat was born in Goa, where his father, an ex-defence officer, was posted, but he grew up in Delhi. He completed his engineering degree in Delhi. At age eighteen, he started a sports website with his friends and began writing on Twitter. Alongside tweeting, he worked for a data analytics company, which he soon left. He then joined a startup in Delhi that organised football leagues. Soon after, he transitioned into digital sports marketing, managing social media content for an IPL team and other sports organisations in India. There, he learned how social media and sports are interconnected and how social media is crucial for publicising sports and shaping narratives.
Later, he returned to his hometown and started working as a production engineer while also creating cricket content. For the first six months, he didn't earn any money from his cricket content. During the IPL, he served as the resident expert for ‘12th Khiladi,’ a sports website. He has been working with Cricket.com for some time now. He feels that nowadays there are not many detailed sports articles in newspapers, which might explain the rise of many sports websites that provide more data-oriented and informative coverage.
Gurkirat says that when he started sharing his opinion, his goal was never to make money but to reach the audience. His efforts have been paying off for the last two years. However, he doesn't do long-form writing due to time constraints. He feels there are not many technical insights about the game available to the general audience.
Recalling his childhood, Gurkirat says he had a well-spent childhood in Delhi. He had been interested in sports from the beginning. He recalls eagerly waiting for the summer holidays so he could play all day. He would wake up early in the morning and play until night. He was introduced to cricket early due to its popularity in the country. He didn't know much about other sports. Around 2010, when the Commonwealth Games were held in Delhi, he learned about various games. His interest in football, tennis, and cricket grew over time, and he developed a passion for watching these sports.
Gurkirat says that for viewers, it’s common to write off players. However, players often prove us wrong by performing better than expected.
Talking about his mistakes, he shares an incident when he travelled to a different city to record something for a client but forgot his camera. Although he managed to arrange a camera, he couldn’t record properly, which he regards as a mistake. He also admits that, as a youngster, he tweeted negatively about Rohit Sharma for not performing well, but now he realises that trolling and name-calling are wrong and should not be done. He now chooses his words carefully when criticising any sportsperson and says he has matured a lot. He has learned from his mistakes and moved on in his life.
Regarding his accomplishments, Gurkirat says that, as a cricket content creator, he is followed by many popular cricketers on his Twitter account. His biggest achievement was when Jarrod Kimber, the famous Australian cricket writer and filmmaker followed him. Additionally, interviewing Sharda Ugra, the popular sports writer on his channel ‘Ghapshap with Gill’ was a significant accomplishment for him.
When asked about his role models, Gurkirat says he considers his parents and his family his role models for giving him a good upbringing and supporting his career goals. He learned from his parents to ask questions, which shaped his personality and developed his critical thinking.
If someone wants to become a cricket analyst or cricket enthusiast, Gurkirat advises them to be critical of the game because being a fan can influence their opinions. He believes that being critical at the right time will earn you respect from your audience. He adds that any sport is demanding and full of obstacles, making it challenging to discuss sports without bias. Therefore, it is always advisable to speak thoughtfully. He is also against worshipping any individual and advises his audience not to do the same.
