Girish Rajani is the owner of two business firms, Om Guru Kripa Borewells and Interiors and Om Guru Kripa Tiles & Sanitary, in Udaipur. He specialises in digging borewells and deals in submersible pumps, tiles, and other sanitary fittings. He has been in this business for the last 23 years.
Girish was born and brought up in Udaipur. He says he had a zeal to do business even when he was in school. Long back, he had started a PCO/Photostat shop. In his shop, he came into contact with people doing the borewell business and learned the tricks of the business from them by accompanying them to digging sites. Then he started his own borewell firm 23 years ago. In 2012, he opened another showroom of tiles and sanitary items.
Girish shares that when he did his MCom, he thought of becoming a CA. But, as he was already in business, he could not give time to its preparation and dropped the idea. Initially, his father wanted him to do the business of making ready-made garments, but he had an inclination towards the borewell business. He further says that today he feels satisfied that, after overcoming all hurdles, he is a successful businessman.
Talking about struggles, Girish says that as his father was the sole earner in his family, he tried to manage his expenses just after he had passed the tenth grade and became financially independent at a young age.
When asked about his role models, Girish says his father has been his role model in life for doing business, social work, and politics. His father taught him how to be dedicated to his work and also how to work for others in society.
Girish remembers his childhood, when he had a lot of fun with his sisters and friends. He also remembers how his father scolded him when he tried his hand on his father’s scooter and met with accidents.
In Girish's opinion, education is very important in today’s world. However, he also thinks that experience prepares you for the ups and downs of life.
For the new generation, Girish’s advice is that they should first learn the technicalities of borewell work before starting a business. He feels they should work as managers on borewell sites for one or two years and then think of starting a business, as there are many complexities in this work and it is not as easy as it seems.
If a time machine takes him back into time, Girish would like to go back to his school days when he wanted to become a doctor. He would also try to become a CA.
Talking about his COVID experience, Girish says that COVID time has taught us many things. We have realised that money is not the only important thing in this world, and we must help each other in a crisis. It is extremely necessary to be humanitarian and social. He thinks people also realised the importance of giving time to their families. Besides, in his opinion, this period has also hastened the process of digitization in education and business, which is good for the country.
In his free time, Girish indulges in indoor games with his children. He also watches movies and spends time on social media.
As his father was active in politics, Girish too developed an interest in it. He worked hard for student welfare when he was in college and wanted to run for the University Student Union elections. But he did not eventually go for it, as his Guruji forbade him from doing so. However, he has been active politically and socially. He is the vice president of the Udaipur Youth Congress. He is also very active in his Sindhi community. He formed the Jhulelal Yuva Sangathan in 2000 and is also the founder of the Jhulelal Naari Sangh. He is General Secretary of the Sindhi Central Yuva Sansthan and also Secretary of the Jacobabad Panchayat. His organisations regularly organise blood donation camps, the cleaning of the lakes, and other such activities. They also help in dispute resolution within their community and help people in distress.
Girish’s message is to always be disciplined and polite. You should remember that short cuts will never help you. If in business, try to satisfy your customers fully, says Girish.
