Work hard, practise regularly, and strive to achieve perfection.
Geetha Nair is a dance instructor specialising in the classical dance forms of Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam. She has been performing on stage in the field of classical dance for the last more than 40 years.
Geetha belongs to Thrissur, Kerala, and currently resides in Pune. Recalling her childhood, Geetha shares that her father was interested in dance, and so was she. Having noticed her talent, her father encouraged her to join a dance class. After finishing her schooling, Geetha joined Kerala Kalamandalam and feels fortunate to have learned from her gurus the composition, style, and expressions of classical dance.
Talking about her challenges, Geetha shares that since Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam are two different forms of dance, it often felt difficult for her to master both of them. However, with the support of her parents and gurus, she continued to work hard and pursue learning both the dance forms.
Speaking of her achievements, Geetha feels happy to share that she started her own dance school in Pune in 1984 and has taught over six thousand students so far. Geetha was the first to land a scholarship from the central government in Mohiniyattam. She has been the recipient of various awards in the field of classical dance.
When asked about her role models, Geetha says that her guru at Kerala Kalamandalam is her role model, and she is thankful to her for the immense knowledge of art that she imparted to her.
Besides dance, Geetha’s hobbies include listening to music, designing dance costumes, and composing a variety of dances. She also considers dance a therapy for her stress issues and a medium to attain mental peace.
Geetha advises aspiring dancers to work hard, practise, and strive to achieve perfection. She suggests they start their dance journey with classical dance and then move on to other forms of dance, like western dance.
Her life mantra is that hard work leads to success.
