Geeta Devi is a well-versed tourist guide known for her historical narrations.
Originally hailing from Bihar, Geeta now works at Pratap Gaurav Kendra, Udaipur. She has been living in Udaipur for the past 23 years. She belonged to a poor family. Her father worked hard and got selected for a government job as an electrician. Her mother was involved in a small business. Married at a tender age, she moved to Pratapnagar. She now works as a guide and tells the stories of Maharana Pratap to the tourists who come to visit the place. She is inspired by the stories of the valor of the king and his war against the Mughal emperors.
Geeta began her tourism guide career in 2016 and has been working for 5 years. Suggesting aspiring tourist guides, Geeta says that they must exhibit good communication and behavior when dealing with customers. She adds that they must have an overall knowledge of the history of Rajasthan. Fluency in languages like English and Hindi is important to answer the questions of tourists, says Geeta.
Drawing a comparison between the two, Geeta says that both education and experience are important. She learned the importance of education in her life and the difference it makes coming from a poor family. Experience helps one learn to face many different hurdles in life.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism department followed guidelines laid down by the government. During this time, she stayed at home with her family and considered this time one of the most fruitful times of her life.
Her guide and fellow workmates are her professional role models. Her father is also her role model because he worked hard and rose to success from nothing. He was the one who supported her in every step of her life. On a concluding note, she asks us to respect our heritage and work towards establishing a better society.
