Gaurav Prabhakar Mali is a zealous filmmaker who not only directs films but also runs his own production company “THE RAW FILMS”(TRF).

Gaurav Prabhakar Mali, born and brought up in Udaipur, belongs to a lower middle class family, where his mother is a homemaker, and his father works in a travel agency. Gaurav completed his engineering from Geetanjali College of Engineering. He has always been passionate about storytelling since his childhood onwards.

Talking about his childhood days, Gaurav says that he was a bright student in his school days but storytelling was something which has always grasped his mind and heart. Being an introvert he had limited friends since childhood, and used to play Doll games with his two sisters. He has always been a binge film watcher.

While pursuing his Engineering, Gaurav realised that he is not made for a technical job, but at the same time he was thankful that he got many opportunities to participate in college functions, plays and dramas. He got first prize in a play called “Nukkad” and second in “GITS got talent”. People praised him a lot, and that motivation and confidence paved his path to the writing and direction field. After completing his engineering he did several jobs as a writer.

Gaurav went to Mumbai to pursue his passion as a screen-play writer, but due to insufficient  opportunities for script- writing, he had to return back to Udaipur. He downloaded film scripts and underwent the basics of script writing. He launched his own website gauravprabhakar.com, where he used to publish his poems and stories.

Talking about his turning point in life, Gaurav says, telling my parents about my dream, and convincing them for the same was one of them. Afterwards, he left the job and started working in Digital marketing. He learned about lighting effects and film editing by himself.

In 2016, Gaurav started his own YouTube channel named “The Raw Films”. He made many short films too, but was quite unhappy as he was unsatisfied with his creations. He realised that he needed to make films for himself not for auditions. Gaurav started improving himself, and his short film “Gudgudi” was selected in LosAngles and Nigeria.

Gaurav himself  worked as a writer, cinematographer, editor, and lightman for his films. He learned softwares to write stories, edit films etc. In 2018, he started his own company “The Raw Productions”, where he used to provide Digital Marketing and content writing services. In 2020, his another short film “1869” was released, which proved to be a milestone for his career.  Gaurav proudly considers this film as his best one. “1869” is his first short story having three songs in it. The story is based upon the disaster that happened in Rajasthan in 1868-69. The film was selected in many national and international film festivals, and was awarded too.

Gaurav advises young filmmakers that direction comes with a lot of responsibilities, so they must possess leadership qualities. Management and smartness is an important factor for becoming a filmmaker. He further says that if a person wants to become a filmmaker, he must be a binge film watcher, and must try to learn things as much as possible because films inspire you to make films.

Basu Chaterjee,Terentino, Imtiaz Ali, Satyajit Ray are some of the directors who have inspired him. According to Gaurav, education plays a very important role in our life, as it gives us confidence and makes us disciplined. Education comes with experience.

Gaurav says if he could go back in time, he would like to enjoy his childhood days, as he had not enjoyed much. Watching movies is his favourite pastime. Spending time with family is the most necessary thing one should do. He further says that one must appreciate nature. Last but not the least Gaurav wants to dedicate a song to all-
