A passionate writer and history enthusiast, Eshan achieved a significant milestone by publishing his debut book, "The Teacher I Never Met," about Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, at the young age of seventeen. Additionally, he spearheads the initiative 'Karwaan,' aiming to promote history among young minds through heritage programs across the city.

Eshan Sharma is a Heritage Activist leading a student-driven history and heritage promotion initiative called Karwaan: The Heritage Exploration Initiative, which he started in September 2019 at Delhi University. He is also a writer, having penned his first poem about his grandmother at the age of eleven, marking the beginning of his writing career. At seventeen, he published his debut book, "The Teacher I Never Met," based on the life and works of India’s former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The book took six years to complete.

Talking about ‘Karwaan’, Eshan shares that their aim is to promote history among young minds through heritage based programs around the city. They conducted four or five such programs before the pandemic. However, due to the lockdown restrictions, they had to shift to an online medium, where they offered lectures and interacted with historians. He believes that passion is the key to success and he approaches all his endeavours with enthusiasm and passion.

Eshan was born in Meerut and completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Kanpur, and joined Delhi Public School for his 11th and 12th grades. He then pursued a History Honours degree at Delhi University, graduating with average marks. Throughout his school life, he was an obedient child and an avid reader. He wrote his first book at the beginning of his 12th grade. However, he does not consider himself a professional writer or historian but a student of history, striving to master the craft of being a historian.

Eshan says that success means satisfying your inner passion. He advises following your passion wholeheartedly. For aspiring writers, he suggests reading as many books as possible, both fiction and non-fiction, to develop a good command of vocabulary and an understanding of different writing styles and drafting of chapters. He recommends reading works by Shakespeare, Durjoy Datta, and other renowned writers. He  adds that writing stems from experiences and encourages future writers to start with diary entries to better express their emotions.

He advises writing in a flow, being truthful, and remembering that you are writing for yourself first. He reminds aspiring writers not to lose hope with rejections, citing J.K. Rowling's journey with "Harry Potter," which took 14 years of rejections to get published. He suggests learning from every rejection and making necessary changes to your book.

Eshan believes that education and practical knowledge go hand in hand and that implementing learning comes with experience. He adds that education is not a mark of intelligence and laments the rote learning system in India. He feels that removing the examination concept could help build creative minds capable of processing and implementing information in real life.

Discussing the inspiration behind his first book, "The Teacher I Never Met," Eshan recalls seeing Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam during IIT Kanpur's golden jubilee celebration in 2012. After attending Dr. Kalam's lecture, he researched and read extensively about him, which inspired him greatly. The idea of writing a book came to him in 2016 through his diary entries. He completed writing the book in 2017, and it was published mid-year, shortly after Dr. Kalam's passing. He regrets not being able to present his book to Dr. Kalam. The book tells the story of a child raised by Dr. Kalam, who continues to search and write about him.

Talking about the pandemic, Eshan acknowledges the challenges everyone faced in staying motivated. He finds motivation through reading and interacting with people and admires the movie "The Pursuit of Happiness" starring Will Smith.

Besides reading, Eshan enjoys listening to songs, particularly "Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai" written by Santosh Anand, which keeps him happy and calm during tough times.

He urges the youth to find their own source of motivation whenever they feel low in life.

He urges the youth to find their own sources of motivation when feeling low. He emphasises that they should not tolerate any injustice against themselves or others and should stand against it to contribute to nation-building. He believes the youth can be change-makers, starting with helping the lower strata of society. He encourages them to speak up against the rewriting of history and false narratives that divide communities, advising them not to blindly believe information from WhatsApp but to derive knowledge from books.

Fascinated with the concept of time travel, he says if he could travel back in a time machine, he would revisit March 1947, when Lord Mountbatten came to India with the partition plan. He would undo this scenario to avoid the violence and migration of so many people while celebrating India’s independence.
