Dr. Vinod Agrawal retired from Sukhadia University as a Dean of the Science College and Chairman of the Faculty of Earth Science in 2016. He was a teacher in the Science Department and served the University for thirty-seven years and still is engaged in a research project of the Government Higher Education Campaign.
Dr. Vinod hails from Udaipur. He took his primary education from Guru Gobind Singh Higher Secondary School and higher education from School of Basic Science and Humanities, MB College. He did his M.Sc. from the Department of Geology, which at that time was a part of Rajasthan University and did her PhD also from there itself.
Dr. Vinod says that initially his family scenario was not so good because his father was a clerk and had eight children. So in the beginning, they did not see prosperity and that’s why they went to government schools to get education. When he understood the importance of education, he completed his M.Sc. from first class and got the job of lectureship.
Dr. Vinod says for the initial five years, he was a temporary lecturer but in spite of that, he continued his teaching work diligently. Soon he became permanent and today he has retired as the Chairman of the Faculty of Earth Science.
Dr. Vinod’s role model is his guru Professor RK Srivastava, under whose supervision he did his PhD as he learned to work hard from him.
Dr. Vinod’s life mantra is to be happy with what you have got, because if you look up, many people are above you, of course you will be disappointed but as soon as you look down, you will know that you are above many people. So he advises, enjoy what you have got, be happy with it and thank God for giving you this much.
Dr. Vinod suggests that if a student chooses Geology as his career, then there is a lot of scope in it but the condition is that he will have to work hard because this is a practical science field. He can’t get all the knowledge of it from computers. Instead he has to go to the field only then he will be able to establish himself in the subject of Geology. He says there is a wide scope of employment and self-employment in this field. So to become a successful Geoscientist, along with the theoretical aspect, practical aspect is equally important.
In his free time, Dr. Vinod relaxes by using Facebook and Whatsapp. Along with this, he likes to watch Discovery, National Geography and news channels in his free time. Other than this he gives at least five hours daily in his research work and writing books of his subject to impart his forty years of knowledge to the students with the medium of his books.
Talking about achievements, Dr. Vinod says he has been awarded a Distinguished Service Award by UNESCO IOGS, an International Organisation of Geology for starting a new subject called Environmental Geology across the country. He has received an award for Environment studies by UGC and State Government. The Rotary Club also honoured him for this. Apart from this, he believes that from a temporary lecturer to sitting on big posts is no less than an achievement for him.
Dr. Vinod believes that leadership doesn’t come from childhood, it is developed with time. He says he also did not have such skills initially but gradually when circumstances taught him to move forward and when he came in contact with his mentors, these qualities developed in him.
Dr. Vinod says that the period of Coronavirus was very unexpected and such situations have never been seen before. Initially, he got worried about how things would work out because it became very difficult to spend time at home. But later he wrote a book ‘A guide to Geological terms’ with one of his friends which is a positive outcome of that period.
Dr. Vinod advises the young generation that don’t study with the purpose of getting a job because other than jobs there are many other fields in which you can establish yourself or become an entrepreneur. Besides, there are many schemes of the government. He also feels that dependence on consumerist culture is increasing in society. So there are many such fields of self-employment where you can get a chance to prove yourself.
