Dr. Sushma Kushal Kataria, an anatomist at Dr. Sampurnanand Medical College in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, has made significant contributions to the field of anatomy through her research and publications. She joined as an assistant professor in 2005 and became an associate professor in 2011. Her expertise and dedication have earned her recognition as a leading authority on the subject.
Sushma teaches first-year MBBS, physiotherapy, nursing, and paramedical students, providing them with basic knowledge and clinical information. She believes that by imparting a strong foundation and practical understanding to her students, they will be well-prepared for their future careers in healthcare.
During her twenty-two-year journey, she has learned many things. She is also involved in the administrative section and works to create a setup that inculcates discipline and punctuality in students. Sushma says that she is also called upon by institutions like the RPSC (Rajasthan Public Service Commission) to set examination papers and conduct interviews, the Medical Council of India to act as a coordinator, and also for various UG/PG examinations as a supervisor. These institutions play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and credibility of medical education in India.
Sushma discusses her accomplishments, stating that she arranged two workshops on methods that she developed and is currently putting into use. One method that aids in the explaining process is the soft body embalming of corpses, which keeps the deceased soft and in motion. Plastination is the second method, which produces anatomical specimens suitable for study and research.
Prior to deciding on a non-clinical stream of anatomy, Sushma stated she was interested in surgery. It was a wise choice, according to Sushma, who can now successfully manage her home and career and spend more time with her family.
During the initial wave of COVID, she used to go on rounds and take all essential precautions. She moved to office work during the second wave, creating schedules and charts for residents and physicians. According to Sushma, this ailment was affecting even family members, and it was a difficult time for everyone.
Sushma shares her success mantra, saying that since childhood, she has always believed in hard work and perseverance. Her never-give-up attitude, despite facing several setbacks, has helped her achieve her goals. She believes that, with determination and dedication, anyone can achieve their dreams.
Sushma's advice for anyone new to this industry is to put in a lot of work. According to her, a lot has changed. There is now too much competition, and MBBS alone is insufficient. It is necessary to pursue both super-specialization and post-graduation. She adds that the only people who should choose medicine are those who are truly interested in this profession.
Sushma credits her husband, Dr. Kushal Kataria, and her teacher, Dr. Mohbe, as her role models, providing constant support and encouragement and inspiring her to take on new responsibilities and challenges.
Sushma enjoys spending time with friends and listening to music to relax and unwind from her profession. She also enjoys spending quality time with family and exploring new places, believing that these experiences rejuvenate her mind and enhance her creativity. These activities help her unwind from her demanding profession.
