Through her songs, poems and radio-compering, Dr Shakuntala Saruparia has always highlighted the pain, agony, and real-life situations of women in society. She has also worked as a journalist.

Dr Shakuntala was born in a family of journalists, wherein her father worked as a bureau chief  with the Hindustan newspaper. Imbibing such an environment and mood, she too did a year-long diploma in Journalism after finishing her degree in MA (Sociology). Since her college days, Dr Shakuntala took a keen interest in drama, NCC, NSS, singing, and other cultural activities.

After marriage, she moved to Udaipur and worked in several newspapers. She joined the newspaper ‘Jai Rajasthan’ as a journalist for a start. She also hosted the  program - ‘Yuwavani’ on Akashvani, Udaipur. She hosted the popular program ‘Nari Jagat’ on radio for 15 years. Moreover, in 1995 when ‘Dainik Bhaskar’ was launched in Udaipur, she joined it as a journalist.

Dr Shakuntala has been an avid songwriter, poet, and singer and has written and sung Rajasthani folk and Rajasthani Garba songs. Her songs were released on cassettes in those times. She also got the opportunity to do anchoring for events and shows. Therefore, the early phase of her career was quite fun-filled and exciting. Currently, she is ready with her two books named “Kahaniyon si betiyan” and “Hewda Ro Helo - a collection of Rajasthani songs”. She also works as the editor-in-chief of her fourteen-year-old magazine, ‘Tanima’, through which she spreads her thoughts of women empowerment and upliftment.

Dr Shakuntala advises the youth of today to freely choose what they want and develop and have a point of view of their own. They must have patience, routine, and discipline for attaining success. She believes that success is a mental construct and a never-ending conquest.

She considers her father as her inspiration. She values and looks upon his principles of consistent hard work, dedication, and journalistic abilities. She liked his learned aura, and thus similar to his, Shakuntala has built a library full of books. Hence, she invests in books and reads literary content on the internet whenever free.

Along with being a journalist, singer, songwriter, and poet, she is a painter too. Her collages usually capture the essence of agony and pain of girls. She likes to paint the black-and-white lives of women with colours of hope, enthusiasm, education, and zeal. She likes to showcase the real-life situations of women through her various talents. One of her favourite shayari lines are, “Hum toh dushman ko bhi izzat se saza dete hai, uthate nahi haath, nazron se gira dete hai”.

According to Dr Shakuntala, to err is human. Her habit of trusting people easily and quickly is her biggest mistake, as she shares. Therefore, she advises the youth to be careful and keep patience.

Talking about the plight of poetry and journalism, she gets emotional and says, “samvedna ka jal aur dil mein nami” is what we lack today. She thinks that journalism and poetry are responsibilities and not only for making money. Thus, she wants future journalists and poets to be responsible, inspirational, and excellent in their job.
