Dr. Sai Kaustuv Dasgupta is a Motivational and TEDx speaker, certified Happiness Coach, Author, Singer, and Graphic Designer. He was born in Siliguri, West Bengal, and is currently based in Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh.
Sai suffers from a rare disease named Osteogenesis Imperfecta Brittle Bone Disease and has 90 percent disability. There is no cure for this disease and his bones can break with the slightest of pressure. Due to this, many of his bones have deformed and now he is confined to a wheelchair. Sai says that after having fifty fractures he stopped counting as he wanted to focus on the good things in his life and leave all the negativity aside.
Sai has a Limca Book Record along with fifteen other international recognitions to his name. He is also running a community by the name ‘Happiness Unlimited Community’. Sai is a Global Disability Leader with his name on the Global D-30 list.
Sai shares that his father, Dr. Kaushik Das Gupta, was from a journalism background and so Sai got to meet many new people. He likes interacting with people and knowing their stories.
In childhood, Sai used to love dancing and was also training in Kathak. However, when he was around five years old, the doctors suggested he give up dancing as it would be detrimental to his health. Sai felt that every good thing was going out of his hands. It was around this time that he and his mother, Dr. Sheela Dasgupta, who was a trained Singer from Allahabad University, started Sai’s musical journey. Sai got a chance to sing with legends like Anoop Jalota, Anuradha Paudwal, Rashid Khan, and others. Sai shares that he could not become a playback singer but the likes of A. R. Rahman and Shreya Ghoshal share his singing videos.
Sai says that they shifted to Puttaparthi for his further treatment. One fine morning in 2009, Sai realized that he was not able to move at all. All his movements got restricted and so did his dreams. For six years, Sai was confined to a room, not able to do anything, not able to pursue his passions. The darkness that was surrounding him pushed Sai into a phase of severe depression. Sai says that the word ‘Depression’ is very loosely used nowadays but he is aware of the trauma that it really is. This phase of depression continued for four years. One day, while meditating, Sai heard an inner voice asking him to rise and fight the situation. Sai started taking his life differently and felt that he had to do something for people like himself, who are differently-abled.
One of his friends suggested that Sai learn Graphic Designing. On the first day, Sai took fifteen minutes to move the cursor present on the screen. However, with determination, he completed his Diploma in Computers in six months and also learned Graphic Designing.
By now, Sai had accepted the way he was. He says that his family always supported him and motivated him to achieve everything in life. Sai started his research in Happiness, Accessibility, Inclusion and Diversity and received an Honorary Doctorate from the London University for it.
In 2007, Sai became the fourth Global Disability Icon and shared the list with Hellen Keller, Stephen Hawking, and Srikanth Bolla. Sai says that he has been following Stephen Hawking from childhood and is inspired by him a lot.
Sai says that his Success Mantra or Happiness Mantra in life is to be grateful. He feels that we don’t thank this universe much. He also adds that we should not be judgmental in life. He says that he gradually realized his worth and also his mission to create awareness about happiness and life. Sai says that he has been excluded and taken advantage of many times in life but does not regret it. He feels that every mistake or adversity in life is a teaching experience.
Sai feels that everyone has full control of their life and can steer it in any direction. He says that people call him ‘Wheelchair Warrior’ and it has only been possible because of his determination and lively attitude.
Sai says that if he is given any Super Power in life, he would like to change the thinking and mindset of people and not his condition. He feels that people know him for who he is and would not like to change that. Sai also requests parents to support their differently-abled children and to let them do whatever they desire to do in life.
If given a Time Machine, Sai would like to go back in time when he fell in his bathroom and broke both his legs. It was in 2001 and he had not been able to walk ever since. So, Sai would like to go back and change that.
