Dr. P. Rama Devi is a Kuchipudi dancer. She is also the founder of the Sri Sai Nataraja Academy of Kuchipudi Dance. She is currently a professor at the University of Silicon Andhra in Silicon Valley, California.
Rama had initially started learning dance from Guru Chaimanjari Kunjuman Nair. She took Bharatanatyam lessons from him for some time, but due to the family's shift to Andhra Pradesh, her mother sent her to Guru Sri Mahakarnaya Sriman Narayana Guru to learn Kuchipudi dance. After marriage, she shifted to Hyderabad, and due to family responsibilities, she had to stay away from dance for some time.
Rama has done a Diploma course in Kuchipudi dance and an M.A. M.Phil. and Ph.D. also in Kuchipudi Dance She did her PhD in Kuchipudi dance on the topic "Comparative Study of Chaturvidha Abhinayas between Kathakali and Kuchipudi." In 1989, she founded the Sri Sai Nataraja Academy of Kuchipudi Dance.
While doing her studies in dance, Rama found that there was a paucity of books on the subject of classical dance in English. So, she authored and published six books on Kuchipudi dance. Along with this, she has also developed a CD on the dance, "Natyasastra in a Nutshell." She claims her books are used as reference books for various courses in Kuchipudi dance across the world. She is also associated with the Ministry of Culture as a panel member.
Describing her childhood memories, Rama says that she used to be very naughty because she was the youngest of the siblings. But even then, she had a passion for teaching. When she used to study in the ninth or tenth grade, she used to go to the villages and teach the alphabet to underprivileged children.
Rama shares that, in childhood, she just wanted to play; she was not interested in dancing. Her teacher was very strict and used to punish her with a stick. She says that at her tender age, when she was unable to focus on dance, her mother played a very vital role, as she knew that little Rama was such a talented dancer. Rama used to give the exact expression of her guru, despite her young age, and it was only after seeing this that her mother made her pursue the field of dance.
Describing her challenges in life, Rama says her journey was not that smooth because of the family obligations she had to manage and the need to balance her life with dance. She had stopped dancing for many years after her marriage. She was 35 when she decided to return to dance and education after her two children had grown up. She says that when you return to your field after so many years, you are hesitant at first, but your years of dance practice pay off and you regain your form.
When asked about mistakes, Rama says that when we become greedy, we start committing them. She believes that being emotional and getting too close to people have left her with some bitter experiences. But she has taken lessons from her life experiences and learned to balance her emotions.
Speaking about her achievements, Rama says she feels her books are her biggest achievements. She feels proud and accomplished when students come to her and credit their success to her books alone.
She also mentions one of her most proud accomplishments, that she is the only Kuchipudi dancer in seventy years to have performed the three forgotten “Kalas." She claims that she revived and presented Golla Kalapam and Dadi Amma Vishakantha with the assistance of her gurus.
Rama advises parents who want their kids to succeed in the dance world not to see classical dance as a form of entertainment and not to expect name recognition and overnight fame from it. Classical dance, like the Vedas, requires years of practice to master. The student must be instilled with a strong desire for dedication and devotion to the classical dance form by both parents and the guru.
When asked about her role models, Rama says she considers her gurus Rama Rao Garu , Sri Bhagavathula Sethuram Garu and film actress Swapan Sundari as her role models. She also looks up to her family for support and inspiration, particularly her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and daughter.
Rama likes to go shopping in her spare time to unwind after a long day. She also enjoys gardening and adoring her garden's plants and flowers. She visits temples to find peace.
Rama encourages people to donate and help those in need. She says, “Manav sewa is Madhav sewa”.
