Dr. Rajshree Behra is a Senior Professor in Transfusion Medicine and is working as the Medical Superintendent at Dr. Sampurnanand Medical College in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. She had joined the college as a Senior Demonstrator and has been working here for the past 32 years. She is currently managing a 700-bed hospital with a staff of 500 people.
Rajshree says that she had completed her schooling and college (MBBS and M.D.) from Jodhpur. Her husband is a Physician and her daughter is a Gynecologist and Obstetrician. Her son-in-law is also an Orthopedician.
Rajshree shares that her father came from a very small village in Nagaur. Her father was the first graduate from their village. He retired as a Senior Scientist from Defense Research and Development Organization, Jodhpur. Her father always motivated her to study hard and build a good career.
Rajshree says that she has seen the struggle village women have to go through. She had always aspired to have a better life and hence studied hard to achieve something in life. Her dream to go into the medical field developed when she was in the fifth standard. She says that she was not brilliant in her studies but was a very hard worker in life. She always achieved whatever she wanted to and desired.
Rajshree tells us that she got married in the final year of her graduation. However, her mother-in-law encouraged Rajshree to keep studying and go for higher studies. She did her internship and then her Post Graduation after marriage and with the support of her husband and mother-in-law. She was also selected in the Rajasthan Public Service Commission.
Talking about Covid, Rajshree says that it was a very bitter period of her professional life. She had joined as a Superintendent during the peak of the Covid wave in August 2020. Her hospital was also declared a Covid Hospital. They had around 500 Covid patients admitted to the hospital. She still remembers how patients used to come gasping for air and in critical condition. For around 15 to 20 days, Rajshree got to sleep only for two hours a day. Her phone used to ring day and night for beds and oxygen. She has also seen the time when they had to accommodate two patients on one bed. The emergency ward of 20-bed capacity was upgraded to 45 beds capacity. They were accommodating patients wherever they found a place for them. However, Rajshree is happy that no patient lost their life in her hospital due to a lack of amenities or care. She feels that Covid is a drastic disease and should be taken seriously.
Rajshree shares that her mother is her role model. Her mother herself was educated up to eight standard only but always motivated Rajshree to get a good education. Her nature was to help everyone and she is still remembered for her compassionate personality. Her mother used to say that after becoming a doctor, Rajshree should contribute some time towards social service as well.
Rajshree feels that education is a must. Experience can not be gained without education as we have to first learn the basics before applying them in the field. A balance of both should be focused on in her opinion.
To young girls, Rajshree's advice is to choose a goal in life and start working for it. She thinks only if we are educated then only we can guide the next generation. She feels that girls need to be more dedicated and serious about their life and career.
Rajshree says that there are two happiest moments in her life. One, when she cleared the PMT examination, and two, the birth of her daughter in 1992.
Rajshree says that the youth should follow three principles in life: Hard work, Dedication, and Honesty. With these principles in life, even the toughest situation can be overcome.
