A Bharatanatyam exponent, Radhika  has experimented with celluloid numbers to bring Bharatanatyam to the general public through the visual medium.

Radhika Shurajit is a Bharatanatyam Performer, Teacher, Choreographer, Media Visualiser and Television Director. She is one of the  senior most disciples of the renowned dancing couple, the Dhananjayans -Padma Bhushan Vannadil Pudiyaveettil Dhananjayan and Shanta Dhananjayan. Radhika has been in this field for the past thirty years.

Sharing her journey, Radhika says she had started learning and performing dance along with her sisters. They were popular as the Trio sisters. She, along with her sisters Gayatri and Shobana, has performed in numerous places across India and at several International Festivals at Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Germany, the USSR, the USA, Iraq, South America, Middle East, Europe and Australia.

Radhika has also established a dance institution, ‘Thrayee School of Bharatanatyam' in Chennai. At her institution, she imparts dance training, and her students also perform for television and on various platforms. She says her motive has always been to take classical dance to the general public. Her dances appeal to the general public while being traditional and while staying within the limits of the dance grammar of Bharatanatyam.

Radhika reminisces about her childhood fondly, recalling that she was raised in a middle class family. Her father worked in the airline industry and her mother had a passion for Bharatanatyam. Despite not having had the opportunity to learn it herself, her mother sent all three sisters to the Dhananjayans to learn the art form. Radhika's motivation for learning Bharatanatyam was not to become a performer, but rather to experience the joy of learning it. She fondly looks back on her journey from a beginner learner to becoming an accomplished dancer.

Radhika's "arangetram" was a significant milestone in her Bharatanatyam journey. Unlike most students who get it after training, Radhika's gurus permitted her to perform it on her 100th performance to test how much dance she has absorbed in her. This journey of dance connected Radhika and her two sisters despite their different personalities and critics even referred to them as a three-way mirror. After performing solo for many years, Radhika opened her own dance institution where she is taking forward the legacy of her gurus.

As a dancer, Radhika faced various challenges during her Bharatanatyam journey, despite gaining recognition and performing on respected platforms. She mentions that her journey was not easy, and it required hours of hard work, perspiration, and aspirations to achieve success. Despite being a computer system analyst, she dedicated herself totally to her passion for dance.

Carving out a niche for herself Radhika recreated Bharatanatyam performances by fusing it with old popular celluloid numbers. People criticized her experiments with the art form. But in a very beautiful way, she took the songs of cinema to the common people by staying within the limits of Bharatanatyam. She gives credit of her success to her disciples and musicians and says that they made her dance-experiments successful. Her journey has given her awards, name, fame and recognition.

When asked about her role models, Radhika looks up to her mother as her ultimate role model, admiring her strength and support. Her dance teachers, the Dhananjayans, also influenced her during her formative years. She learned from her school and college teachers that hard work pays off in beautiful ways. Throughout her career in television and cinema, she has met inspiring people who have influenced her as well.

Radhika's achievements are truly noteworthy. She has played a key role in creating national award-winning songs, putting her skills in conception, visualization and direction to great use. Not only that, she has also dedicated her time to training over twelve thousand students, making an impact on the next generation of artists. Her contributions to television and film productions have been equally impressive.

Referring to her mistakes, Radhika says everyone makes mistakes, and she was not an exception. Although Radhika may not call them mistakes, she acknowledges that she has made them. She understands that her actions in the past were a result of her level of maturity and understanding at the time, but she also recognizes that she has grown and evolved since then.

Radhika enjoys gardening, reading and watching movies when she is not working. She also presents papers at various conferences. She loves to spend time with her granddaughter.

Whenever she feels low, Radhika always remembers the saying “This too will pass”. She regularly does worship and meditation which keeps her calm and composed in every situation.

Radhika suggests the new entrants to the dance field to keep patience and have reverence for our art, heritage and culture. She advises them not to come in this field just for quick success; just surrender yourself to the art and God and be a complete dancer by learning the dance wholeheartedly.
