Dr Anup Paliwal is a Consultant Paediatrician at GBH American Hospital in Udaipur for the last one and a half years. He completed his MBBS from Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary, Karnataka. Then, he got selected for specialising in Paediatrics and completed the master’s degree from JLN College in Ajmer. Later, he went to Delhi for a fellowship in Ontology and worked at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital for a year. Subsequently, he worked as a freelancer in Noida and gradually started his OPD too. There he worked for over a year before returning to his hometown, Udaipur, in 2015.
In 2015, Dr Anup commenced his work in the Bhandari Children Hospital as a Paediatrician and an Assistant Professor in Ananta Medical College. He worked at these institutions from 2015 to 2019. At last, he joined the GBH American hospital and has been working there to date.
Dr Anup shares that working as a Paediatrician & Neonatologist is a daily challenge, but due to his immense interest in being a child health specialist, he does his duties happily. He claims, in his medical journey, he has saved the lives of many premature newborns with a weight less than a kilo. He vividly remembers the case of a newborn baby girl of just seven hundred grams, whom he treated and discharged with a weight of almost one and a half kgs.
Dr Anup shares that in MBBS, he had to study all the subjects for a full four years. During his internship he realised his interest lay in paediatrics. The smile and warm energy of the kids motivated him to choose this field. He says that kids teach us a lot.
Dr Anup suggests that exploration of interests before choosing a specific medical field for specialisation is crucial. Doing paediatrics is difficult since the newborn will not speak of their problems and symptoms. But with a humble nature and good listening and comprehension skills, one can do their best. Also, keeping their inner kid alive is the first step to success in this field.
Dr Anup’s corona experience was tiresome. Being a healthcare worker, he had to go to the hospital every day and serve the patients. It was a disastrous time for everyone, but the doctors had to deal with it responsibly. Although, he is happy that very few kids were ill in such times as being at home saved them from the usual sickness and ailments. However, he is worried that these times have caused mental health problems among the children as they had no outer world exposure, no schools, outdoor games, and other social life activities. Being exposed to phones and television screens their eyes and brain are at much more risk than ever.
Education is of higher value than experience, according to Dr Anup. He thinks that education helps us learn about new things and keeps us updated. And while working, gradually one acquires experience. Hence, education is the first step to being able to get any experience.
Discussing leadership he considers himself a born leader since his school days. Currently, his staff respects him as he works as a team person. He feels that a good leader should work as a team member and give equal voice to each member of the team.
Playing with his kid and sometimes playing cricket and reading books are his favourite pastime activities.
To move forward in life despite the obstacles is his driving force and source of inspiration. His father is his role model who has always motivated him to work hard and move forward to get success. “Winners never quit, quitters never win”, is the quote he believes in and follows as his life mantra.
