The profession of a doctor demands hard work, patience and empathy towards your patients.
Oshin Saraiya Shah is a doctor by profession and currently practising in GBH American Hospital. She completed her MBBS from Geetanjali Medical College, Udaipur and her Doctor of Medicine from Ahmedabad. Oshin's parents are in the medical profession and she took inspiration from her father to be a doctor since she grew up watching him treating his patients and earning goodwill for himself.
Oshin completed her senior secondary from Kota which was a struggling phase for her since it was the first time she ventured out of her comfort zone. Oshin is married in a non-medical family and treasures the fact that she can have knowledge of different fields without having to stick to only medicine as a profession. Just after fifteen days of her getting married, Oshin got admission in a post-graduate course at Ahmedabad and had to stay alone in Gujarat within a different culture which she found quite challenging.
The advent of the pandemic made her life difficult since she was on the verge of finishing her degree and her exams got postponed. She couldn’t make a return to Rajasthan as she was immediately posted to treat covid patients. Amid the chaos, she herself got infected and was hospitalized in Ahmedabad for a week. After completing her isolation period, she came back to Udaipur when COVID was at its peak in Rajasthan. Unfortunately, her family also got infected and she faced a difficult time managing her patients and family together. Oshin shares that her in-laws and her husband have been a constant support in terms of her career and when she got down with COVID.
Oshin’s childhood has been blissful, filled with happy moments and the quality time she used to spend with her family. She has been both studious and actively participated in extracurricular activities like dancing and acting. In her free time, Oshin loves to travel and plant trees.
For medical aspirants, Oshin shares that one needs to be mentally prepared to study long hours, be patient and calm and know that one has to be available in case of emergencies.
For Oshin, education and experience both are important, however, she feels that knowledge coupled with clinical practice is much valued and fruitful.
Oshin’s role models are her parents. On the professional front, she considers her father as a role model and on the personal front, she takes inspiration from her mother since she taught her to maintain a balance between her work and family life.
If Oshin could go back in time, she would like to relive her childhood or maybe her college days. However, she likes to live in the present and enjoy every moment without making any repetitive mistakes.
