Dr. O. P. Jangir retired from the Department of Zoology at Government Dungar College, Bikaner. After that, he joined IASE (Deemed to be University), Sardarshahar, and retired from there as its director. Throughout his forty-year academic and research career, he made exceptional contributions and credits his father and grandfather for his success.
Dr. Jangir comes from a small village named Rasoolpur in Jhunjhunu, but he currently resides in Bikaner. He describes his childhood as very carefree. There was no electricity in his village. However, he spent his days playing with friends and working in the fields. Raised in a joint family, he was taught good values by his grandparents and parents, which helped him succeed in life.
In his village, there wasn’t a school beyond the primary level. His grandfather always motivated him to study. Later, he was sent to Piramal Higher Secondary School to complete his higher secondary education. He says that Piramal School, a boarding school, instilled in him good qualities and manners. After completing school, he did his B.Sc. from Government College, Neem Ka Thana, followed by an M.Sc. in Zoology from Rajasthan University, Jaipur.
He shares that during his master’s course, his subject professor’s working style impressed and inspired him to study the subject more deeply. He pursued research under his professor.
During his research, his father sent him a postcard saying his marriage had been finalized and he got married in 1977. He continued his research post-marriage and completed his PhD. He credits his success in research to his wife, admiring how she took care of their three children.
Dr. Jangir notes that during his time, teaching was more emphasized than research. However, he observes that now research is gaining importance and is seen as equally important as teaching.
During his tenure at Government Dungar College, it was well-known for research. He guided 21 students for their PhDs and MPhils. He and his researchers conducted remarkable research on the development of the third eye in frogs, which was widely appreciated and published in national and international research journals. Many scientists visited the university to see his research work. He was featured in newspapers and on various TV channels, including BBC London, Zee News, and Star News, making his family proud.
He continued his research work, focusing on corneal regeneration, retinal regeneration, heart regeneration, and lens regeneration. He received many research opportunities and major projects from the UGC. Even after retirement from Government College, he continued his heart regeneration research and joined the IASE-deemed university, Sardarshahar, in Rajasthan. He retired from this university as a director. Today, he provides consultation for research work at various institutions.
Talking about COVID-19, he mentions that the lockdown halted everything, including research. During this period, he engaged in roof gardening.
Dr. Jangir shares the lessons he has learned from his life experiences. He believes that the key to success is hard work. He advises young people to engage actively in research. He emphasizes setting targets and working honestly to achieve them.
Dr. Jangir also discusses the failures he faced. He did not have an English-medium education, and when he attended Nagpur College, he failed an exam due to his lack of proper English knowledge. However, he took this failure positively and worked hard to overcome his weakness, eventually passing his B.Sc. with flying colors. Later, at Rajasthan University for his master's degree, he attended classes for spoken English.
Dr. Jangir advises young people to develop good communication skills to express their thoughts. He stresses the importance of being able to express ideas and put forward your views. He believes that, with strong communication skills, one's background will not hinder their career.
