Dr. Om Prakash Suthar is an associate professor at Government Medical College, Pali. He has been in medical teaching since 2013. He is working in the Anesthesia Department. Before becoming a teacher, he worked in a government hospital in 2008 and served the public for four years.
Om has done his schooling till 10th grade in his village, and for his senior secondary, he moved to Jodhpur. He has his MBBS from RNT Medical College, Udaipur, Rajasthan, and his M.D. from Government Medical College, Jodhpur.
Om tells us that he was a top student at his school and was good at studying. However, when he moved to Kota for his PMT coaching, he realized that everyone there was exceptionally good in their studies, and he started putting in extra effort. He cracked PMT in 2001 and says that it was a very tough competition as there were only 550 medical entrance seats.
He says that coming from a small village, he had to struggle through language barriers as he was from a Hindi-medium background. Fighting tough competition to reach the post of Associate Professor is what his greatest achievement is. Om says that he is soon going to be promoted to the post of professor at his medical college.
Om feels that education is a fundamental requirement in life. Without education, one cannot grow in life and cannot get a good-paying job. However, he also feels that experience helps us in learning the implementation of that education, and without experience, education is nothing but ‘Kaagzi Gyan’, or bookish knowledge.
Sharing his opinion on leadership, Om says that he had leadership qualities from his school days. He was the head of the scout team at his school. He was also associated with the RSS and was a ‘Mukhya Prashikshak’ with 30–40 ‘Swayamsevaks’ under him. Presently, Om is also working as the in-charge of OT (Operation Theater) and has to deal with subordinate staff. He says that he treats them equally and is like a friend to them. His leadership skills are also utilized in convincing patients and their relatives in critical cases.
Om says that COVID was a new challenge for him. He was looking after the critical care of patients in the ICU and had to keep their oxygen levels maintained. He was also head of the procurement of oxygen cylinders, and maintaining a proper stock of oxygen was his responsibility. He says that seeing young people lose their lives was disheartening. It was a stressful period for everyone.
Om feels that the young generation should be disciplined and follow a defined timetable in life. He used to follow a perfect routine, and it has helped him a lot in life.
Om considers his elder brother his idol. His brother has worked hard to provide for the education and necessities of the family. Om says that his brother is a dedicated worker and inspires him each day.
If given a time machine, Om would like to go back to his college days and would like to give more time to his friends, which he could not do earlier.
In his free time, Om likes to go out and sit alone in peace to contemplate. He also likes talking to his friends over the phone and discussing their common childhood memories.
