Dr. Neeti Sharma is a Professor and Head of the Department of Radiotherapy at the RNT Medical College, Udaipur.
Dr. Neeti says that she was fortunate that she didn’t have to face a lot of struggle in her life as she comes from a well-to-do family of doctors. She sailed through her career very smoothly, too. She says that it was very obvious to her from the very beginning that she would join the medical field because her mother was also a doctor.
Neeti believes that the job of a doctor is to be compassionate and caring towards his/her patients. She says that when she relieves her patients from excruciating pain or a chronic disease and they show gratitude towards her, she feels that she is doing something of value, which is above the monetary aspect.
Talking about her field, Neeti says that cancer is best treated when diagnosed early, in the first stage per se. She says that if the stage gets advanced, the doctors and the patient have to struggle a lot to treat it, so a timely and proper diagnosis is really important.
Neeti says that due to the COVID situation, many patients could turn up on time for their chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions, and thus their stages progressed. On the educational front, Neeti says that the PG students in her college were able to continue their studies; however, the UG students faced discontinuity during the lockdown.
Neeti is happy that there is a lot of scope for radiotherapy in Udaipur, as the city has five medical colleges equipped with state-of-the-art cancer-treating equipment.
Neeti believes in being a good human being first before becoming a good doctor. She says that the medical field should not be treated as a business, but rather as a noble profession. Care and compassion are the tools on which the relationship between a doctor and patient should be based.
Neeti regards her father as her role model. She says that he taught him the basic values, and he always motivates her in her life.
Neeti says there are many things that can result in cancer, as the environment is polluted and filled with carcinogenic substances. She suggests avoiding smoking and consuming tobacco products, as they are one of the main causes of cancer and do no good to our bodies. She informs us that breast cancer is predominantly a genetic disease and can be avoided by breastfeeding and frequent screening.
Neeti recalls her childhood and says that they used to have fun engaging in physical activities, unlike the children these days who are constantly stuck to their mobile phones.
Neeti’s favorite pastime is to listen to songs and watch classic Hindi movies. She also likes cooking and gardening very much.
