Ramayana is an ocean in which we need to drown.
Dr. Narendra Kumar Mehta is a former lecturer of Political Science. Over his 44-year career, he worked for the education department of the government of Madhya Pradesh. In addition to this, he kept on writing and produced several curriculum-based publications for the education department. He has read the Ramayanas in around thirty different languages and has written five books based on his research on the epic.
Speaking of his books, Dr. Narendra explains that the first one included one thousand multiple-choice questions based on the Valmiki Ramayana. His second book focused on the lesser-known, unusual incidents about Hanuman and Shri Ram Katha. About sixty of the events he investigated and wrote about in this book are those that are not known to the general public. His subsequent book was written in a variety of regional languages and had about fifty-sixty episodes. The other book, titled "Shree Ram Katha Ki Durlabh Kathayein," is a compilation of twenty to twenty-five different Ramayanas.
He wrote a book called "Sabse Bada Naam Ram Ka'' despite suffering from several illnesses. Though he continues to write, he now finds it difficult to do it due to his ill health. He has contributed to several official publications published in Purvottar Bharat and South India, including Tulsi Manas Bharti, Tulsi Saurabh, Madhya Pradesh Sandesh, and Samanvay Purvottar and Dakshin. His writings are still published in 40 to 45 periodicals every month.
Dr. Mehta believes that the Ramayana has a wealth of knowledge and that by adhering to it, we may actually experience heaven on earth. Especially, there is a Sanskrit book called ‘Ram Raksha’ that has a lot of beneficial information that we should read. He shares that, in a Sanskrit Shloka, Lord Shankar tells Parvati that Ram is the supreme name in the universe. He counsels everyone to read one or two passages from the Ramayana each day, comprehend it, and apply it to their lives. He feels that when a person immerses themself in Ram, all negative emotions such as pride, desire, rage, and greed vanish and they begin to experience heaven on Earth.
Discussing the different Ramayanas, he states that the Valmiki Ramayana is the largest and the original Ramayana. The Valmiki Ramayana is the source of all Ram tales. Based on it, other authors wrote Ramayanas such as the Krittivasi Ramayan in Bengali, and other versions of the epic in other languages, like Tamil, Gujarati, etc., that have diverse narratives. Tulsidas wrote the Ramcharitmanas in Hindi.
Later, Ved Vyas authored the Sanskrit Adhyatma Ramayana and Valmiki wrote the Anand Ramayana. He claims that every state in India has rendered the Ramayana in a way that is unfathomable in their own language. He claims that since each Ramayana has a unique focus, everyone should read and comprehend the epic.
He narrates an interesting story that Belgium-born Kamil Bulke travelled to India in order to propagate Christianity. He learnt Hindi, completed his MA, M.Phil, and PhD at Allahabad University, and authored a Ram Katha since he was so moved by the story of Shri Ram. This demonstrates that the Ramayana is the only book in the entire world that has the power to defend our nation, community, and faith. He feels really proud that a woman by the name of Molla wrote the Ramayana in Telugu.
Dr. Narendra Kumar Mehta was born in Ujjan, where his family was beset by financial difficulties. His father taught at his own small school, and there were seven of them in the family. He was sent to Burhanpur, where he was cared for and raised by his elder sister. He is a follower of Lord Hanuman, and believes that he passed high school in first division by Hanuman’s blessings only.
In 1959, he joined Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School and began teaching there. Meanwhile, he carried on with his studies along with teaching, passing several advanced exams, including MA and B.Ed. Given his parents' advanced age, he never accepted a promotion in order to continue serving them, as he had sworn to do so for as long as possible. As he had been the editor of the school journals, he became a full-time writer in 2003 after retiring, and he continues to write now.
Regarding his role models, Dr. Narendra states that his elder brother, the very intelligent and accomplished Hindi poet, writer, and teacher Radharaman Mehta, is his inspiration. He respects his brother's perseverance in making a name for himself under really difficult conditions. He advises all the young people to work hard, never give up, and tackle challenges head-on.
Speaking about his own experiences, Dr. Mehta remarks that while he had numerous obstacles in his life, he never gave up and overcame them with courage. His job required him to travel frequently, and his wife—a teacher as well—took care of the family. He takes great pride in the fact that his kids followed in his footsteps, put in a lot of work, and are now all PhD holders with respectable jobs in the education field.
Sharing his accomplishments, Dr. Narendra says that God has done him immense good, changing him from an ordinary guy to a writer, a literary person, and the storyteller of the Ramayana. His articles appear in around 40 national periodicals and newspapers each month, which provides him the motivation and drive to write.
He encourages everyone to recite the name ‘Ram’ and witness what miracles come into their lives instead of wasting time. You'll gain courage and motivation, and you'll make progress. He thinks that Mahabharata, meaning mutual fights, takes place in households where the Ramayana is not read. We learn how to live as a unified family from the Ramayana. He advises the next generation to study the Ramayana and live as a joint family, since doing so would help you acquire many positive traits. The Ramayana is an ocean into which we must plunge. He claims that studying the Ramcharitmanas, living our best life, and making the most of it are the keys to success in human existence.
According to Dr. Narendra, the younger generation of today is going down the wrong path and committing misdeeds or committing suicides because they are afraid of failing and the consequences of which their parents have to suffer. He conveys to the next generation the need to be patient, not be scared of challenges, and not chase materialism to the exclusion of other pursuits. Offer your prayers to God, pursue achievement in life, and definitely serve your parents.
