Winner of the ‘सर्वश्रेष्ठ सर्वोत्तम प्रतिभावान छात्रा’ award, HoD Dr. Kavita Sharma now leads undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, emphasizing ethical practice, scientific rigor, and practical training to strengthen the criminal justice system and prepare students for impactful forensic careers.

Dr. Kavita Sharma is a Professor and Head of the Department of Forensic Science at Medicaps University, Indore.

Having more than 30 years of academic experience, she joined Medicaps University in 2025. She expresses great satisfaction and feels happy in working here as the Head of the Department, overseeing more than 400 students enrolled in undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs in Forensic Science.

She received a prestigious award on a merit basis during her college days. She also served as the Secretary of the Student Union of her college. The award she received, “सर्वश्रेष्ठ सर्वोत्तम प्रतिभावान छात्रा ” remains a proud memory for her. She worked for 30 years in a single organization before joining Medicaps University and feels extremely happy and fulfilled serving here.

Dr. Sharma shares that forensic science is a very fascinating subject and has received an overwhelming response from students. The department has well-qualified faculty members and well-equipped laboratories to support academic and practical learning.

HoD Dr. Kavita Sharma explains that Forensic Science is a scientific field directed towards the recognition, identification, individualization, and evaluation of physical evidence through the application of principles and methods of natural sciences for the administration of criminal justice. She explains that this subject is extremely fascinating for students and offers excellent career opportunities. With the implementation of BNS and recent changes in the criminal justice system, the role and importance of forensic science have become significantly stronger, leading to very promising future prospects for students.

Dr. Sharma shares that her inspiration to join this profession came from her family, especially her father, who was a Professor of Economics. Observing his dedication, discipline, and honest hard work motivated her to pursue an academic career. She further shares that forensic science directly assists the criminal justice system and is not merely a book-based subject. It involves practical work to establish truth and strengthen justice while contributing to the protection of society. These aspects strongly motivated her and continue to give her immense satisfaction in her profession.

Dr. Kavita Sharma was born in Indore; however, at that time, her father was posted in Agar Malwa near Ujjain. She spent her childhood in Agar Malwa, a small tehsil, where there was only one government school. She completed her entire school education at that government school. She fondly remembers every aspect of her school life, including her teachers and their teaching methods, and credits the school for imparting both education and values.

She recalls that every Saturday they used to participate in ‘Bal Sabha’, where participation was compulsory. Students had to recite poems, sing songs, dance, or perform other activities. This system encouraged overall personality development. She actively participated in all activities, and even today, she cherishes those sweet memories. She expresses her desire to pass on whatever she has learned to her students.

Talking about role models, Dr. Sharma shares that her first inspiration has always been her parents. Her mother taught her fairness, honesty, and hard work, which enabled her to serve her family and profession sincerely. Her father supported her education wholeheartedly and dreamed of seeing her grow in the teaching profession, which ultimately led her to become a professor.

Another major role model in her life is her teacher Dr. S. L. Garg, whose philosophy, “Nothing is impossible in life,” shaped her mindset. This philosophy helped her fulfill responsibilities and face challenges that seemed difficult to others. She deeply respects him and considers him a guiding force in her life. She shares that she begins every day by chanting “Om Sah Gurve Namah,” remembering her guru and starting every task with his blessings, believing this practice fuels her success.

She also mentions a famous song that deeply inspires her:

“ये तो सच है कि भगवान है, धरती पे रूप माँ-बाप का, इस विधाता की पहचान है।”

She explains that this song reflects how parents and teachers are divine forms on earth. Whenever life presents challenges, these lines give her patience, trust, and motivation to move forward with courage.

Forensic Science Professor Dr. Kavita Sharma advises newcomers in forensic science to build a strong foundation in basic science subjects such as physics, chemistry, and biology. She emphasizes the importance of analytical thinking, keen observation skills, and common sense, stating that forensic science is essentially the science of common sense. She also highlights the importance of practical exposure, hands-on training, report writing, and the ability to work under pressure for forensic professionals.

HoD at Medicaps University Dr. Kavita Sharma stresses that integrity, patience, and ethical responsibility are extremely important in forensic science. Since this field directly assists the law, forensic science acts as the third pillar of the criminal justice system, alongside the police and judiciary. Therefore, forensic science professionals must be thoroughly trained and ethically strong.

Her message to the youth and colleagues emphasizes that knowledge is beneficial only when accompanied by character, responsibility, and service. A strong character resolves many problems in life. She believes that if society gives us something, it is our duty to give back. She appeals to youngsters to contribute positively to society and shares the motivational lines:

तुम विजेता हो, जीतने की आदत बना डालो, अपनी कमज़ोरियों को ही अपनी ताक़त बना डालो। यह काम है मुश्किल, कहते हैं हारने वाले, तुम हर मुश्किल को आसान और मुमकिन बना डालो।

She shares that she did not face major struggles in her career because she worked sincerely, remained disciplined, and followed the values instilled by her parents. She was always a meritorious student and secured positions in merit lists. After completing her studies, she received job opportunities of her choice. However, one challenge she faced was transitioning from Hindi-medium education in a government school in Agar Malwa to English-medium college education, which required extra effort.

Her father, who had completed an M.A. in English, recognized the importance of English proficiency and helped her at home. They would study in Hindi first and then translate the content into English. She advises students to focus on English language skills and computer literacy, as both are essential in today’s technology-driven world.

Whenever she faced difficulties in college, her family supported her in translating and understanding academic content. As a teacher, she observed similar challenges among students and consistently encouraged them to overcome language barriers through hard work. She believes that subject expertise must go hand in hand with strong English communication skills.

She shares that her career journey was smooth, and she always performed well academically. Her parents’ dream of seeing her as a teacher came true, and after marriage, her in-laws also supported her career wholeheartedly. She never faced obstacles due to family responsibilities and continued to grow professionally with their support.
