Coming from a poor farmer's family, Dr. Hari Ram overcame financial challenges to earn an MBBS degree and later specialised in radiology. Currently serving as the HoD of Radiology at a leading college, he reflects his dedication and passion for medical science. He continues to inspire medical aspirants and advocates a healthy lifestyle among the youth.

Dr. Hari Ram is a Professor and Head of the Department of Radiology at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Umarda in Udaipur.

At PIMS Hospital, they provide medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic services, as well as medical education to students. They offer courses like MBBS and MD in Radiology, among other specialties. They have modern and advanced facilities. Dr. Hari Ram highlights that, in the past, many surgeries required blind biopsies for pus, abscesses, or tumours in any part of the body. Now, with image-guided procedures, they can easily locate the exact position and drain it without causing further complications.

Explaining Radiology, he says it is a core subject in modern medicine, covering both diagnostic and therapeutic science. A radiologist uses different modalities for diagnosis, such as Ultrasound, X-ray, Fluoroscopy systems, CT scans, MRI, Image-guided biopsy, and various interventional radiology procedures. For example, if there is a blockage in a patient's artery, they perform angiography and angioplasty to open blocked arteries. They also treat varicose veins with lasers and stop abnormal bleeding through pinhole surgery. They have full-time interventional radiologists who can address traumatic bleeding caused by road accidents or spontaneous haemorrhages, saving patients' lives.

Talking about his inspiration to choose Radiology, Dr. Hari Ram says he encountered many patients who, due to a lack of diagnosis, kept visiting different hospitals and felt determined to help such people. He found the role of a radiologist challenging but appealing because, through various modalities, one can easily see the most interior parts of a patient's body to identify any abnormalities. With these intervention machines, it has become easy to diagnose abnormalities in the heart, lungs, brain, or spine, and even in a 10- to 12-week-old foetus in the mother's womb. It is possible to detect and diagnose congenital malformations at the earliest stage of the foetus, allowing parents to decide whether to proceed with the pregnancy. He considers these recent advancements revolutionary.

Born in Birol Village in the Jhunjhunu District of Rajasthan, Hari Ram shares that he came from a farmer family. He points out that villages have always lacked good education facilities. He took an entrance test in the fifth standard and was admitted to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, where he received full sponsorship, including accommodation, a CBSE curriculum, English-medium teaching, hostel facilities, and a transportation allowance to travel to his village. He attributes his career-success to this central government sponsorship.

He passed the PMT and earned his MBBS from Government Medical College, Baroda. He then pursued his postgraduate studies at AIIMS, Delhi, before switching to Radiology at B.J. Medical College and Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad. After completing his post-graduation, he joined the medical education sector and is currently a Professor and Head of Radiology at PIMS Hospital.

When asked about his role models, he mentions his seniors, Dr. Ranga Rao, an oncologist heading the Metro Group of Hospitals in Delhi, and Dr. Chandan, a practising physician in the USA. Both helped him clarify his vision and inspired him. In the past 20 years in medical teaching, many professors, teachers, and colleagues have also inspired him.

Regarding his struggles, Dr. Hari Ram says that he loves working in the medical field and radiology, and approaches new challenges with passion.

Sharing his achievements, he says that coming from a farmer family and reaching the position of professor and head of the department is a big achievement. He feels content and happy with his life.

To all medical aspirants preparing for entrance tests like PMT, pre-PG, or super-specialization courses, he says that PIMS hospital is equipped with all the necessary facilities and faculties. Their teaching schedule is refined and updated, and the faculty includes renowned professors. He acknowledges that the medical field is challenging but ultimately satisfying, as it involves saving lives.

In his message to the youth of the country, he emphasises that many young people waste their time on social media. While social media can connect you with many people, it is important to filter the content you consume. Follow pages that interest you rather than wasting time on unnecessary content. He warns that "sitting is the new smoking" and advises getting up and moving regularly. He highlights that many diseases in young people are due to sedentary lifestyles. He advises youngsters to change their sedentary habits, avoid peer pressure, stay away from addictions, and use social media judiciously. Incorporating sports into daily life is also important, advises Dr. Ram.
