Dr. Naveen Goyal is a laparoscopic surgeon at GBH American Hospital, Udaipur. He shares his views on the medical profession and his experiences in it.

Dr. Naveen has been working as a laparoscopic surgeon for the past 15 years at GBH American Hospital.

He was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and completed his schooling in his hometown. Naveen was good at mathematics and never actually dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, he took the maths-biology combination as an elective, and hence both doors of engineering and medicine opened up for him.

Eventually, he opted for the medical field and does not regret his decision. Initially, for two to three months, he struggled to adjust to the new setup, but with time, everything fell into place. Naveen says that the joy that he gets after successfully treating a patient is irreplaceable.

Talking about the profession, Naveen says that it is a tough field to be in. One has to leave his social and family life behind. A call of emergency can come anytime, and nothing matters then. It also takes a lot of training and mental ripening to face critical situations. Naveen says that accuracy and precision make a good doctor.

Talking about COVID, Naveen points out that it was a testing phase for the medical community. All normal practices have completely changed. From wearing PPE kits throughout the day to operating a COVID-positive patient, they had to do everything. His parents also contracted the disease. However, with proper care and assistance, they recovered.

His success mantra is a simple ABC rule: Availability, Behavior, and Competitiveness. According to Naveen, a doctor should be easily available for his patients at any hour of the day, adopt positive and polite behavior to comfort his patients, and also be able to tackle the pressure of clearing exams.

Naveen considers his maternal grandfather to be his inspiration. He worked hard and took care of the family as a wise guardian. Naveen also reveres his parents and considers them a source of constant inspiration.

Naveen says that a doctor should be a good leader. He has to lead from the forefront to deal with a patient. He also has to lead his team and get the best results out of them. Creating a link between hospital staff, junior residents, and patients is what a doctor has to do as a leader.

His hobbies are listening to semi-classical and old Bollywood songs and reading fiction novels.
