Dr. Chitra Madhavan is the Director, Founder, and Music Teacher at Ganamrutha Music School, Chennai.
Born and raised in Chennai, Chitra was married at the young age of sixteen. With her husband's support, she pursued her career in music, completing a BA, MA, and PhD in the field. For the last forty years, she has been imparting her knowledge and passion for music to her students.
In her musical journey, Dr. Chitra has learned from numerous stalwarts, mastering the fundamentals and nuances of music. Despite feeling that Carnatic music is underappreciated today due to its complexities, she still has dedicated students who practice and perform it diligently. She admits that more students prefer Hindustani music, but she has been teaching Carnatic music successfully.
Recalling her childhood, Dr. Chitra shares she began learning music at the age of three. Despite spending her early days in her in-laws' traditional joint family, she pursued her passion for music and turned it into a profession. She faced many challenges in her career but remained steadfast in her dedication.
Dr. Chitra's journey was filled with ups and downs, but her hard work and perseverance led her to success. Throughout her journey, she was supported by her husband and her gurus.
When asked about her mistakes, Dr. Chitra says that she has always tried her best to avoid them.
Her role models are the late B. Rajam Iyer, B. Krishnamurthy, and her teacher Bhagirathi.
Sharing her achievements, Dr. Chitra says that she believes that her greatest accomplishment is following her passion for music and teaching it to others.
A religious person, Dr. Chitra considers meditating, singing, and praying as her mantras for life.
