Dr. Prem Bhandari is a prominent ghazal singer who has been awarded the ‘Pandit Madan Mohan Bhatt Lifetime Achievement Award’ by the Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur.

Dr. Prem Bhandari was born and brought up in Udaipur. He did masters in Sociology and Music, and pursued PhD in ‘Ghazal Gayaki in Hindustani Classical Music’. It was applauded as a rare subject and received rave reviews from Maestros such as Pt. Ram Narayan (sarangi), Naushad (music director), Gulzar (writer, poet), Jagjit Singh, etc.

Dr. Prem says that learning music was not considered to be good at the time when he was young. Neither society nor his family members supported him to learn music, except his mother. She motivated him to pursue his passion. According to Dr. Prem, music plays an integral part in one’s life.

Currently, Dr. Prem is the head of the music department at MohanLal Sukhadia University, Udaipur. With a Ph.D. in music, he is a regular performer on AIR and Doordarshan.  He is also an approved poet (Hindi and Urdu) for these two organizations. As a singer, he has performed at many music concerts in India such as the Acharya Brahspati Sammelan (Mumbai) organised by Sur Singar Samsad. As a composer, he has done short films, a company song for Hindustan Zinc Ltd., Sanstha geet of Maharana Mewar Foundation, Udaipur. Dr.Prem has given music to 25 full length plays, directed by famous personalities such as Baba Karant, Bhanu Bharati, and Mangal Saxena. He has also released a few albums of his own. A collection of Urdu ghazals titled "Jheel Kinare Tanha Chand" written by him has been appreciated by leading poets in India and Pakistan. He has shown talent in all these fields of music.

Besides music, he loves to play volleyball. He further says that games help us learn many things, such as how to deal with adverse situations, how to face failure, etc.

When asked, Dr. Prem says that if he could go back in time he would like to learn more things in music from his Guruji.

Dr. Prem feels that making a career in music is not an easy job. In music a person has to do daily riyaaz, and needs to use creativity in each and every performance. Dedication and consistency could help a person become perfect.

Dr. Prem wants to suggest to the young generation that never expect stardom in a single night, because perfection takes time. He further says that we should love each other and never expect too much.
