Dr. Barkha Makhijani is a Periodontist and Implantologist. She has been teaching budding students of dentistry for the last eight years as an assistant professor at Pacific Dental College, Udaipur. She, along with her dentist husband, has also been running her private clinic, Dr. Saurabh's Dental Clinic & Implant Center, in Udaipur for the last six years.
Barkha was born and brought up in the small town of Gandhidham in Kutch, Gujarat. She had her schooling in her hometown, Mt. Carmel School. For her graduation and further studies, she came to Udaipur and completed her BDS and MDS from the Pacific Dental College.
Barkha says dentistry was a profession very adversely affected by the COVID pandemic due to the nature of the profession. On the one hand, duty said they could not deny treatment to patients in pain, but on the other hand, there was a grave risk of infection. But they did provide treatment, adopting strict Corona protocols.
Barkha says that, just like anyone else, she has had struggles in life. Coming from a small town and a conservative society, it was a challenge for her to come to a different city and state for her higher studies. But she could do it due to her parents’ support. Another challenge was to establish a private clinic in a new city for them and make it successful.
When asked about her achievements, Barkha says her ability to heal people of their pain is a big achievement for her. She feels so good about it. Also, as a teacher, influencing young minds is also an achievement that gives her a lot of satisfaction. She feels great when students revert to her, thank her, and tell her that something she taught them turned out to be helpful.
Barkha says her profession does not allow her much free time, but whatever free time she gets is spent playing with her two-year-old son. She says she yearns to go to cafes and listen to music but hardly gets time for them.
Barkha’s message for students is not to get disheartened by failures. They should treat them as opportunities to improve their performance. She says keeping your morale high is very important.
