Every day is a new opportunity for learning and gaining knowledge.
Dr. Archana Sharma is a Senior Consultant and Laparoscopic Surgeon in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at PIMS Hospital, Umarda, Udaipur. She specializes in handling high-risk pregnancies, infertility, and laparoscopic surgery.
She is passionate about raising awareness among rural women by organizing camps in villages about PCOD, adolescent health, and cervical cancer. Her goal is to spread awareness about cervical cancer across India.
Sharing her achievements, Dr. Sharma says that she has been working in the obstetrics and gynecology field for over 12 years and believes that every new day is a learning day. Her biggest achievement is gaining the trust of her patients. She highlights that PIMS Hospital empowers her as a doctor to help her patients financially and surgically. As a unit head, she is authorized to provide services to poor patients free of charge. They have successfully performed surgeries on several referral patients with complicated cases. In her eight years of experience at PIMS, she has helped more than 2000 women treat their infertility and conceive, many of whom had failed IVF treatments. The hospital excels in laparoscopic surgery and the delivery process.
Regarding infertility, she describes it as a modern day disease, noting that few women suffered from it in ancient times. She attributes the increase in infertility to westernization and changing lifestyles. She explains that women in earlier times did all their work themselves and ate healthy food. She believes a sedentary lifestyle and the culture of eating out are major causes of infertility. She highlights that women with PCOD are at high risk of experiencing infertility in future. She suggests eating healthily and making lifestyle modifications. Her message to adolescent and reproductive-age females is to incorporate exercise into their daily routines, reduce stress levels, and avoid junk food, especially refined flour, oily, and sugary foods. With a healthy diet, infertility can be significantly reduced, says Dr. Archana.
Dr. Archana Sharma claims that PIMS Hospital is one of the best hospitals in Udaipur and the surrounding region, especially in its gynecology department. Patients from even Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, apart from Udaipur, come to the hospital for treatment. They provide services such as normal delivery, cesarean sections, and ICU treatment free of charge.
Dr. Archana elaborates that PIMS offers comprehensive services from the beginning of pregnancy until delivery, including all necessary medicines during the delivery process, at no charge. They accept referrals for high-risk cases from nearby cities like Chittorgarh, Neemuch, and Mandsaur and provide free treatment even if ICU and NICU facilities are required for both mother and baby. This is made possible by the efficient management at PIMS Hospital. They also provide a 24/7 ambulance service for pregnant women, including those in rural areas, available at just a call. They maintain an adequate supply of blood needed during deliveries.
She also states that the gynecology department stands out for its use of the latest modern technology in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries at an affordable price. They have all the latest technological equipment needed to treat infertility, except for IVF, which she believes should be considered a last resort for conception.
Recalling her childhood memories, Dr. Archana shares that she had a beautiful childhood in Shillong, a picturesque city in India. Throughout her childhood, she was the best in her class and scored good grades. She participated in extempore, debates, and other extracurricular activities. She remembers an incident in school when she was asked to write an essay on what she wanted to become in future. Without much thought, she wrote that she wanted to become a doctor, even though she belonged to a business family. Her parents were supportive of her dream.
She completed her MBBS from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur, and received a gold medal for her academic excellence. She participated in stage performances, skating competitions, and other extracurricular activities during her college years. She received gold medals in subjects like Pediatrics, PCM, and Pathology. Ironically, she never initially desired to become a gynecologist, preferring Dermatology, but she is happy now to have become a gynecologist.
Dr. Archana Sharma started her career in Gynecology at MKCG Medical College, Odisha, with the main purpose of serving in rural areas and learning about diseases affecting rural women. She feels fortunate to be part of SADHAN, Odisha, which helped her hone her knowledge. She was a gold medalist in her three-year curriculum and was awarded the Best Case Presentation Award during her first year of postgraduate studies. She was also recognized as the Best Presenter at the Box Society's Best Paper Presentation Award.
Dr. Sharma shares that she has faced many ups and downs in her career as she and her husband, who is a neurosurgeon, struggled to decide where to settle. Eventually, they decided to settle in Udaipur, where they have lived for the last ten years. She worked for a short period at Manipal Hospital, Jaipur, but realized she could provide the best services at a medical college, helping needy and rural people who couldn't afford modern facilities. She feels content helping such people and believes that by being associated with PIMS, she has fulfilled her childhood dream of being in a noble profession.
When asked about her role models, Dr. Sharma says there isn't just one. Her parents always supported and trusted her to let her travel alone to different cities. She admires her husband, who was the topper of Madhya Pradesh during post-graduation and is a source of inspiration for her. Her HOD, Dr. P.K. Bhatnagar, motivated her and taught her surgery, how to handle a department, deal with life, and handle situations in the OT calmly while doing her best during surgery. Her friends, juniors, and colleagues are also her role models in some ways.
One motivational quote that inspires her is, "If you reach perfection, at least you can reach excellence."
To those who want to choose the medical profession, she advises taking it as a noble profession and not for monetary gains. She asserts that a medical professional works on the human body, so it should be treated nobly. She says there are 19 subjects in the medical field, and one can specialize in any of them and move forward in their career. Be honest with your chosen branch, and learn as much as you can. This profession is a 24-hour profession, so one must always be ready to help others and prioritize patients.
Her message to doctors is that there is not much awareness about women’s medical problems in rural India, women are not privileged, and there is a low literacy rate. She urges them to spread awareness among people, not depend on hospitals, and take the initiative to organize awareness camps to educate young girls and older women about their reproductive health, discuss their problems, and try to solve them. She encourages organizing small camps in rural areas to improve the health of our society.
